Common Travel Area, UK to Dublin. Anyone used it recently?

I've booked a coach trip to Ireland in August with my sister but my passport expired years ago and I'm not planning any other trips abroad so don't want the extra expense.
I've read all the Gov.uk info about the common travel area - take ID etc but I'd hate to show up at the ferry port and be refused entry thus ruining our holiday before it's even begun shock.
Has anyone got any reassuring advice for me please.
Thanks.

Thank you for your advice.
I'll try contacting the coach company again to see if I can find somebody more helpful than last time. X
