According to gransnet we only do TV and radio... But some of us do, occasionally, remember the location of the cinema surely? We even get the occasional reduced-price ticket! Or take our grandchildren to see the latest kids movie. Or get the DVD if we have missed something.
What have you seen lately and what did you think? I saw Bridesmaids which was funny, and was all about women, for a change. 4 stars.**
I also walked out of Horrible Bosses which did not get any stars at all in the first 20 minutes.Horrible film more like.
It's kids blockbuster season, so come on, who's seen HP8 or whatever it is, or Transformers 3D?

It's a long cold damp weekend. Having seen moonrise kingdom, we looked down the list of bank holiday options at the multiplex. It was a toss up between Ali G's Dictator and Men in Black 3. Hobson's choice, but DH elected for BIB2. Not 3D though, because DH does not have binocular vision, so it would be a waste of money and probably make him feel ill or something.
Will Smith starting to look distinguished at last (he has looked 20 for so long...)
Written by a Cohen brother, so well crafted story and script. Not as funny perhaps as the earlier ones. Intricate time travel plot. I was dozing a bit by the time we got to the climax.
Anyone seen the Ali G? or the new comedy about the lads in Scotland?
I will probably go to see Fast Girls as part of the Olympic warmup.

We went to see Moonrise Kingdom last night. Hmm. Quirky. About 12 year olds, but not, I would say, a kids movie. Beautifully filmed on Rhode Island. Very american setting - 1960s scout camp - and the acting was very good. Nice to see Bruce Willis without all those tedious, seen too often, Bruce Willis mannerisms. (I was beginning to think he only had about 3 facial expressions - but no! he was unbrucelike)
Bill Murray looked much more like a grandad than the father of a young family, but I suppose it happens.
Trouble for me was that it seemed to be a comedy with no jokes in it.
First 20 minutes I kept waiting for a laugh. Then I kept wondering what genre it was. Love story? Tragedy?
Bit more like a French film than an american one maybe.
Anyone else seen it?

Colin Firth did convince me as the king, although he doesn't look like George VI. The quality of his acting created the story which was the important thing, rather than any resemblance or otherwise to the real character.

I know "Kings Speech" has been out for a while now but I lazlly waited for it to be shown on the tv. Whlst I agree its well acted etc. I could not relate to the "King" as he looked nothing like our beloved and brave King George, and telling my family that had no effect as they all too young of course to remember him. What did you others who have reached a respectable age and remember him thinK? Helen Bonham Carter was a very credible Queen Elizabeth, particularly when you see her non acting as a "real" person at some do or the other. Her acting skills are amazing, from "Howards End" to "Sweeney Todd", nothing like the Bohemian girl she seems when interviewed. I say girl, but I think I read she now in her 40s which is amazing.

I used to go every week with my mother and daughter but the cost is prohibitive especially if the film is not much good. My daughter joined Love Film so now for comparatively little outlay we see all the movies we want as soon as they come out on DVD. I think it was Black Swan that finished me off. Can't believe I paid to see that one.

Marigold Hotel was superb. Looking forward to seeing Salmon Fishing in the Yemen when it comes out shortly - the trail looked good - and Pirates, which looks as if it might be a lot of fun!

The Muppets. Rave reviews and 4/5 star ratings everywhere. Am I missing something? Tried to fall asleep part way through the film but couldn't. Both wanted to leave but hate wasting money!

Ariadne Thu 05-Apr-12 03:37:53

Loved "Marigold Hotel"!

crimson Wed 04-Apr-12 23:01:39

Gosh; who was I talking about? Moving swiftly on...Red Dog was wonderful. The loo afterwards was full of wailing women [including me]. The Woman in Black is going to be shown at Calke Abbey after dark this summer. I shall have to be brave enough to see it there; an opportunity not to be missed.

He gace a talk at our cinema a few months ago. Place was packed out.

Going to see Marigold Hotel on Monday evening at our wee local cinema (with cosy couches to lounge on)!

I enjoyed Marigold Hotel. Went to see it at an old cinema in Shrewsbury, Had coffee and cake first. Someone bought me the book, am a bit worried about reading it now.

Winters Bone was superb, I think I might go to see that film if she's in it. No time for the cinema at the moment but, have to say there isn't much out there to tempt me. The Muppets will be on in a couple of weeks at the Sunday matinee [@ £3 for us!]. I missed The Woman in the Fifth [I don't know where March has gone] which I very much wanted to see. What I am not going to miss is Red Dog; starts next weekend. other than that it's just the Aardman Pirate film. The Illusionist is on tv tomorrow night, I haven't seen it, and Avatar is on telly tomorrow, so I'll watch that [again something I was quite sniffy about when it came out, but I loved it!] As I've got the week off work [taken up with decorating and doing the blessed course that I am now 7 months behind on] I'll hopefully catch up on a few dvd's that I've bought and never watched; may try to borrow Super 8 from someone. Something I will not be watching at the moment is Poltergeist, again on the telly this week; have never seen it, apart from a couple of minutes towards the end and, as I'm on my own at the moment [even the dog has gone away] now is not the time to watch something like that! Oh, and the second Hellboy film is on as well; I liked the first one.

Come on, hasn't anybody else seem anything interesting recently?

Ganja Sat 24-Mar-12 18:40:26

The Hunger Games I gather from DGD, just 15, that this is what the Twihards have moved on to, so I thought I would pop in early on the first morning before the place was overwhelmed with popcorn munching coke swilling teenagers. There are two worlds in this film, the unbelievably evil and grotesque "government", and the poor and downtrodden who live in conditions of almost medieval squalor. There are echoes of Roman gladiatorial games, and of the Nuremburg Rallies when 24 of the young boys and girls are chosen to fight to the death to entertain the crowds - the ultimate reality show! When they are released into the wild the film becomes an exciting survival chase, but they die, one by one, horribly in some cases. I was both fascinated and appalled. What happened to Jilly Cooper and Gerald Durrell for teenagers? I must add that Jennifer Lawrence, so good in Winter's Bone, was superb. She has an incredibly expressive face, but can make herself look like a vacant simpering miss when the plot demands it. Someone to watch. Would you believe they have 12 showings on one day in our multiplex? Talk about catering to the masses!
shock shock shock

Bel Ami, not for the Twihards. R Patz plays such a horrible character that he looks positively ugly at times. Glorious clothes of course, and Paris looked ravishing, but it somehow didn't seem to have the style of Les Liasons Dangereuses ( or Valmont ) though equally cynical. Bit of a disappointment really.sad

Ganja Fri 09-Mar-12 07:59:44

Never saw that, sadly!

crimson Wed 07-Mar-12 23:01:43

Well, he did do Equus, full frontal nudity and all that smile.

Ganja Wed 07-Mar-12 22:59:21

I enjoyed Woman in Black, and have just downloaded the book to read, but I thought Daniel Radcliffe was totally miscast, FAR too young. A shame as he needs to establish himself as an actor in other roles after Harry Potter. It was very scary though.shock

nanachrissy Wed 07-Mar-12 19:37:26

Just seen The Woman in Black with Daniel Radcliffe. First 15mins seemed a bit slow but then it hotted up and I nearly jumped out of my seat several times.
It was an old fashioned ghost story very well done and Dan R was not a bit Harry Potterish.

Ganja Thu 01-Mar-12 08:44:23

Ariadne Have you managed to see Marigold Hotel yet?
We enjoyed it, but they have taken a lot of liberties with the characters, and the story, but not, I think, with the spirit of the book. Incidentally I see that the film of DM's Tulip Fever is now back in production, and scheduled for 2013. That should be worth seeing. smile

crimson Sun 26-Feb-12 18:39:44

There's a lovely film out soon called [I think] The Red Dog, based on a Louis de Bernieres book of which I've never heard. Need to read it before the film comes out; it sounds delighful.

The cinema is still magical - except when people decide to indulge in a noisy three course meal during screenings. The Oscars tonight. We have seen The Artist, The Iron Lady, War Horse and Hugo (the latter two films with the grandchildren) in recent weeks. All terrific productions. We won't stay up for the Oscars tonight but it looks as if The Artist will, deservedly, win lots of gongs. I hope Meryl Streep gets an Oscar for her role as Maggie. She was amazing. Still haven't seen The Help (but have read the terrific book) so will have to catch up on a DVD or subscribe to LoveFilm. Can't wait to see Marigold Hotel. A perfect pick-me-up for gransnetters I imagine!

crimson Sat 25-Feb-12 13:36:51

Just been to see Hugo;shades of Edward Scissorhands [not surprising with the Depp connection] and about half an hour too long. Would love to have seen it in 3D. Did shed a bit of a tear at the end. Missed Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close but would like to see it; director was on telly the other day; he doesn't expect to win anything at the Oscars.

GoldenGran Sat 25-Feb-12 09:34:31

Saw Marigold Hotel last night, it was fun, beautiful to look at and great perfomances by all the actors. Yes they took liberties, but if you manage to forget the book you should enjoy it.
