I see that Julian Fellowes is getting his two penn'orth in before his Titanic series is broadcast so that he can pre-empt the same criticism that was made of Downton. He reckons people wouldn't do "historical nit-picking" if the series wasn't a success. Not sure about the logic of that. confused

Why didn't I think of that, silly sod (me that is)

Stoppard.

Sunday evening watching is basically easy to watch, nothing too deep but keeps your attention, well this program defeats me. The acting is abysmal, the story lines dreadful. Our Lordship (dreadful acting and the son of Tom Stoppard and a well known Mother whose name I have forgotten, Miriam ?) seems to be the man who got us into WW2. I watched the first episode and had a sneaky 5 minutes last night when Kate Humble on BB2 got on my nerves. Never again.

Just remembered.....it was Eileen Fowler.smile

I find it confusing - too many threads and jumps up and down front and back stairs like nobody's business; makes me feel out of breath! I watched the episode last night and thought 'who are all these people?' It seems very forced: Health & Beauty League at that time? Bung it in; Lesbians? Bung it in; Abortions? Bung it in; Rise of Nazism? Crikey nearly missed bunging that one in; An Indian person? Crumbs, yes, the Empire! Bung it in; Maids working conditions? Wow! Forgot that! Bung it in..............
I'm so tired, I must go and lie down on my chaise longue..........smile

It's the sort of unthinking, undemanding Sunday night stuff that I liked when I had to get up on Monday mornings!

Keeley Hawes pouting at the camera in a desparate hope that she is like Kristin Scott Thomas who plays snooty upper class ladies with great panashe- she doesn't!

I have dipped into U/D as relaxation on a Sunday night, but it is just trying too hard to reflect the era and I cannot evince any interest in the characters.
Is there a storyline? if so, what is it?

Notsogrand Mon 05-Mar-12 11:17:49

After the Health & Beauty League there was another ladies keep fit thing wasn't there? They held on to chairs and wafted floaty scarves around. A jolly hockey sticks lady ran it but I can't remember her name.

wotsa One, possibly more, of my aunts was a keen member of the Women's Health and Beauty League and somewhere I have a photograph of her giving a display at the what I think was the 1948 Olympics. I don't know how healthy she was, but she was certainly extremely beautiful.

I watched one episode and was bored. I've been watching Homeland on channel 4, and so far it has been pretty good. I'm ever hopeful that it won't tail off.

I quite enjoy this one. Loved the bit about the Women's Health and Beauty League. The first of the aerobic classes, eh?

absentgrana - I thought exactly the same (about Downton). But then daughter bought us the first series as a Xmas gift, we watched it, and got thoroughly hooked! grin

I confess to having enjoyed the original ITV series of Upstairs Downstairs – with the wonderful Mrs Bridges – many years ago but suspected that reviving and updating it wouldn't work, so I haven't got round to watching the BBC version. I gave up with Downton following the first appalling episode of the first series.

Not as bad as that "Land Girls" they put on earlier!

Didn't manage more than 15 minutes of the first one either. Gransnet HQ we need a boring smiley please!

gracesmum Mon 05-Mar-12 09:46:58

Booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring!

greenmossgiel Mon 05-Mar-12 09:42:15

I watched the first episode and gave up on it!

susiecb Mon 05-Mar-12 09:38:09

Well I thought Downton Abbey was terrible but this is much much worse!!
