Well each to his own!!

Oh sorry I missed that Mishap. I love Sinatra - been busy doing things in the kitchen and didn't look at all the threads. Sounds like it was good. I've got quite a few of his albums

Damn, missed it.
Like we missed each of his concerts in London, because we thought there would always be a next one.
And then there was not.....

OH! YES! We sat and watched in total silence - talk about VOICE! - the singers in that competition (VOICE!) have a lot to learn. Sinatra never just sang, he lived his songs, and the way we used to dance to them, truly romantic - can they really dance romatically to any of the tunes these days. I never understand the words, the the music seems to be a bit repetitive, or am I getting old?

I loved 'Something Stupid' duo with his daughter, Nancy.

I saw him live in London just over 20 years ago! He was mesmerising. I didn't move the whole time he was on the stage, it was wonderful.

Just seen that 'Sinatra Sings' is repeated on Virgin Catchup.So I can watch it all again in the next week.So good to see him in close up and hear the Voice
without all the flashing lights and dancing girls featured in most current shows
My sister and I saw him at the London Palladium in the early 50s - a skinny lad all alone on that big stage. Like you nanachrissy we were mesmerised!.

Why oh why??!! - I think he is quite grim! - never been able to stand him! Tell me what is so good about him!

I did, Mishap - Sinatra lived his songs, and I always felt that the music just flowed through him, but then we can't all like the same things can we? You perhaps enjoy something that I don't, and what a good job we are all different eh? Who is your favourite Mishap?

Mishap it's the Voice ! instantly recognisable.-

During my final exams I was walking down the street feeling depressed and pessimistic when, drifting from a basement, came the sound of Sinatra singing:'You make me feel so young...' Mood dispelled, I made my way to the library and back to the books for the next tranche of exams. Thanks, Old Blue Eyes!

Bryn Terfel - what a voice - and a personality - and skill and technique in every genre of song. I could wrap him up and take him home any day!

I find Sinatra a bit creepy - schmaltzy I suppose.

I'm a Bryn Terfyl and opera fan also -followed his career ever since he was in Cardiff Singer of the world.
Last week I bought tickets for my for my son and my ex to hear Sir Willard White,the Jamaican bass in Bristol .They were both thrilled/amazed by his versatility,skill and technique.

But I also like Annobelstill find that a snatch of 'Old Blue Eyes' can lift my spirits.

@Mishap - What is so good about him?

Well... pitching, breath control, musicianship, interpretation of lyrics... all superior to those of maybe three or four of his contemporaries.

How's that for starters?

Yes - My Way - oh dear!

The pitching, breath control, musicianship, interpretation - they all apply in huge measure to Bryn Terfel.
His opera is wonderful, because he is an actor and has a huge personality; but for me it is his singing of English songs that is superb - he made a CD of English 20th century sings and it is quite the most beautiful music - the control and understanding of the poems that form the basis of the songs have to be the best I have ever heard - I listen to it over and over again. Give it a go!
I might even take another listen to Sinatra with your comments in mind - but not My Way - may the lord preserve us!

My Way has very happy memories for me, at the club I ran (for people with learning difficulties) it was a great favourite - and you can imagine the cacophany (is that the right spelling/word) of sound we had - about 30 people singing in different keys, if that's possible, but all thoroughly letting themselves go I can see them now, after 10 years away - music has no barriers has it.

There is no point in comparing Sinatra and Bryn Terfel. You can enjoy both but not at the same time.
