It does seem that only university students or staff are liable to be murdered in Oxford. I have enjoyed the series, though, and I find it hard to believe that Kevin Whately is old enough to be considering retirement (at least, his character is). How time flies! It seems only a few years ago when he was a fresh-faced DS to the wonderful Morse.

Its a sad day when our favourite stars are considering retirement greatnan makes you realise how time passes.

No, I think it is complicated and hard to follow, not sure if that is the writing or the direction? I don't think it was ever explained how the murders were actually done this week?

I have slightly gone off this now after watching the first of the new series.

It has drifted away from being like Morse and is heading towards Midsomer Murders, with its completely fanciful plot. Bit disappointed really.

Lewis (and a lot of other mystery series) should really be classified as fantasy/scifi because it's obviously set in a parallel universe. For one thing, the speed at which they travel around Oxford suggests they are moving through some flaw in space and time. And the way in which the university operates is different in every episode. I think of it as another Dr Who spin-off.

I'm glad it's not just me, then! Find it hard to follow, now - and although I really like 'Hathaway and Lewis', I think it's getting rather stale. Morse was the man for me!

I preferred Lewis as Morse's sidekick rather than the one who is supposed to be in the driving seat. It's all so very boring now. Midsomer Murders also suffers from a change at the helm. I thought Tom Barnaby was a bit of a sweetie and Joyce and Cully were hilarious in their bewilderment.

Police series are almost always unrealistic - the detectives doing the work are invariably of inspector or higher rank whereas I have it on good authority that, in reality, the real work is done by the DCs and DSs while the top brass sit behind desks and coordinate cases. How many cop series have ordinary DCs as their heroes/heroines? Now, I know, someone is going to tell me.

Scott and Bailey are DCs and do all the legwork while their DCI (can't think of her name) pulls the strings. You're right Annobel. What's the point of rising to a high rank if you have to chase around gasping for breath while your junior occasionally gets to kick down a door if he's lucky.

And they get to park so easily - and never lock their cars!

Must be something about female cops: Cagney and Lacey were hands-on, not management. My favourites of all time as cop shows go.
