my best film is war horse a fantastic story of the first world war and brings tears to the eyes

Modern comedies - Hot Fuzz with Simon Pegg also like his film Paul

Heat with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino (AP does one of his over the top performances which I think spoils the film but apart from that a great film)

Shaun of the Dead, It's a Wonderful Life, A Matter of Life and Death

Lots of those already mentioned but I also loved Al Pacino in ' The scent of a Woman '. I bought the video - an unusual event for me - lent it to friends to watch and the machine went kaput with the film in the slot and it could not be removed and I had never even taken it out of the box! They hadn't watched it either.

Whoops, I forgot Whale Rider.

Crimson - sorry don't agree Carry on up the Khyber was the best - "Time for Tiffin" The burpers and " Oh dear I appeared to have got a bit plastered"

Carry on Screaming was the best Carry On. Od Bod and Od Bod Junior. 'Frying tonight!'......TV series; many years ago 'Love for Lydia'. Poldark was wonderful. 'Oh Ross' [in a Cornish accent]; swoon .

TV series - Mash, Cheers, Frasier! All the adaptations of Dickens and Trollope novels. House of Cards. Oh, please stop me,someone....

Forgot Casablanca, the Searchers, Cromwell, Man for all Seasons.

I'm a fan of Laurel and Hardy films; Charlie Chaplin films; and the earlier Carry On films, Carry On Sergeant, Carry On Nurse, Carry On Teacher, Carry On Constable, Carry On Regardless, Carry On Jack, Carry On Cruising, Carry On Cabby, etc.

Zulu! I've seen it so many times and when they sing Men of Harlech, it's fantastic.

Crikey; I forgot Toy Story..all of them.

I thought the bit at the end of War Horse was good, when he was in no mans land, but the rest of it was rubbish. Wasn't surprised to be disappointed, though. I read the book when it first came out, and then forgot about it till we went to see the play. I love horses so much, but there aren't any in my life these days.

crimson I have only just seen your post about seabiscuit, I have not read the book but will now be looking out for it, as well as the archive footage. The film reminded me of another old favourite from my childhood 'My friend Flicka' - I wept buckets at that one!

Sadly I thought that War Horse took all the sentimentality of those films and turned it into the worst possible schmaltz. Oops sorry - that should be on the 'worst film' thread, not here

Talking of depression medication - Local Hero (1983) is a delightful Bill Forsyth film which I love all the more for the location of the beach scenes. Jenny Seagrove comes up out of the sea (parody of Ursula Andress, but wearing a wet suit) at Camusdarach near Arisaig where I have enjoyed a couple of caravan holidays. Denis Lawson is wonderful as the village's Mr Fixit and there is the bonus of Burt Lancaster as an American tycoon. Plus a cast of the usual Scottish character actors.

Oh - forgot Love Actually. That one is my depression medication!

Have you seen a lot of the archive footage about him as well? Even the chapter headings in the book are enough to make my cry 'The Day of the Horse is Past' and 'The Lone Plainsman'. Strangely enough, although I bought the dvd I don't think I ever watched it. Toby Maguire was perfect as Red, as was the real jockey [I've forgotten his name] who played The Iceman. I haven't seen Secretariat, but I'd imagine it's nowhere near as good.

I cried all the way through crimson! I'm so glad someone else enjoyed it, I was beginning to think I was on my own.

I agree about Seabiscuit. What makes it so good is that it's pretty much based on fact; the horse did survive a life threatening injury and his jockey survived a career threatening one..he did bring hope to people during the depression. The book is probably one of the best books about sport ever written. Boy did I cry at the end of it! [the film, that is]. He's buried on his owners estate, but he never told anyone where the grave was.

Definately anything with Carry Grant in it.
