Panorama on Illegal Marketing Phone Calls

I thought last night's 'Panorama' was well worth watching. I've been plagued by illegal sales calls despite being registered with TPS for many years sad. I am obviously not alone since 17m have signed up to TPS and many receive these annoying calls. I guess that only a small proportion of such calls are reported, not least because you need the company's name and telephone number to make a report. Afterwards, TPS contacts the caller with a warning and, if that fails, the information is passed to the enforcement authority - 1,000 a month! The programme sadly did not have time to discuss solutions, except to issue a plea for an effective TPS. There is an e-petition called 'Make the Telephone Preference Service Effective' on epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/34069 if anyone here is interested smile.

The programme was very interesting. I was amazed at the chap who had bought several plots of land for around £100,000 and had spent everything he had. He was in his 70s and still had to work to support himself. I was surprised that anyone could be that gullible.

I get at least two calls an evening. I let them start to talk and then I just hang up. I even had one call me back saying we were cut off. I said 'no - I hung up' and then hung up again. I am registered for TPS but it doesn't seem to make any difference.

I ahve just signed up to BT choose to refuse I will used it for a few months thne cancel it as we are getting repeated clals even though we are x directory

I reported a PPI claims company to TPS about a month ago and the number of illegal marketing calls has dropped off since. TPS wrote to the company and told them to stop. I'm not sure if the drop in other calls is just a coincidence or in some way connected. I still get international calls but few (for the moment) from the UK. I wonder if this relative peace will last.

If I do get a call, I will now just ask for the name and number of the caller and make a report to TPS. You never know if the information the caller gives is accurate but it's all I can do.
