Does this happen in your house ..... you switch the tv on to find a film you've seen hundreds of times before but think 'oh I'll watch this'. Even though you've seen them loads of times you still enjoy them. In Tatty's house our guilty pleasures include Die Hard , The Running Man , Aliens , any Indiana Jones, Oh and dare I admit it Predator.

I have just (literally) been and changed my profile because I had said I don't watch many films!!! I have realised that I must have watched, and thoroughly enjoyed, at least 90% of all the above mentioned!!!

The Jazz Singer, mainly because I've been in love with Neil Diamond for many years. blush.
And, Death in Venice. I don't know anyone else who likes it, but for some reason I find it absolutely mesmerising. Dirk Bogarde is wonderful, and the music (Mahler's 5th symphony), completely melancholy and beautiful.

And the musical Carousel, almost entirely due to the songs, some of the best in any musical ever, with the marvellous voice of Gordon Macrae.
(anyone remember him?)

And how could I have omitted Roman Holiday, Breakfast at Tiffany's, and Some Like It Hot?

We love Silver Streak with Gene Wilder.
Also ELF with Will Ferrall.

The American President, an underrated film with Michael Douglas and Annette Bening. Dialogue recognisably by Aaron Sorkin, of The West Wing.

We watched Miss Congeniality again the other day for the umpteenth time. Sandra Bullock is very funny - and she reprised the role of awkward FBI agent recently in Heat, also very funny. Wouldn't mind watching that again. M Caine also v funny in Miss C.

The Gay Divorcee, Swing Time, Top Hat, Shall We Dance (this is getting boring!), Valmont and Dangerous Liaisons, Pandora's Box and Diary of a Lost Girl, The General, The Navigator, and most of the ones Feetlebaum mentioned.

I forgot "Where Eagles Dare"......'Broadsword calling Dannyboy'..........Richard Burton's voice still does it for me.

I could watch Quartet again and again, Maggie Smith was superb. Four Weddings, Love Actually, both the Bridget Jones films..

I see some people have mentioned "The Hunger Games" - I think I must be the only person who only managed to watch the first 30 minutes - found it very depressing!

Films I will watch again depend on the mood I'm in - if I'm feeling a bit down then "Hot Fuzz" always makes me laugh also "Paul" with the same actors. If I want chewing gum for the brain then it will be one of the latest shoot 'em up, knock 'em down blockbusters. Something to make me think then probably something like "Citizen Kane" or "Night to Remember". I also loved "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"

The Graduate. Went to see it with the first boy I fell in love with. Didn't marry him but have been with my DH for 40 years next month. Doubt if I would have lasted four years with first one. Still watch the film though. And I still cry at The Railway Children (Daddy, oh my Daddy!!).

feetlebaum Sat 07-Sept-13 12:11:12

I'm Alright, Jack!, The Maltese Falcon, Passport to Pimlico, Brief Encounter, Odd Man Out, Citizen Kane, Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Jour de Fête, Les vacances de Monsieur Hulot, Playtime, Mon Oncle...

I have stopped watching films in the last year or so. I do not like films that rely on special effects, as I think that is artistically lazy, and I am not a fan of any sort of fantasy film. Older films suit me better because they rely on good acting and cinematography.

Are there any really good recent films that I might like? - all recommendations gratefully received!

Last night I watched 'Back to the Future' for about the fifth time.

But it was only to do the ironing to!

Truly, Madly, Deeply; Some Like it Hot; and - oh dear - Mama Mia blush

Eloethan Sat 07-Sept-13 09:55:49

The Sixth Sense, Driving Miss Daisy, Grease, The Parallax View, Brief Encounter (and what I see as a sort of modern telling of it - "Falling in Love" - Robert de Niro and Meryl Streep).

Actually, thinking about it, there are loads of films that I'll quite happily watch time after time. I have a friend who says she will never watch a film twice - because once she knows what happens there's no point seeing it again. I agree that films pack more of a punch the first time you see them - I think the end of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" is unexpected and devastating. That said, I often watch a film several times but am still surprised by bits of it that I'd forgotten.

What crimson said about watching on tv a film that you've got on DVD (but haven't got round to watching) struck a chord with me. I think there's something about owning a DVD which takes away that slight sense of urgency to watch it. I still haven't watched "A Single Man", which I bought ages ago.

Cassablanca. I must know everyone's lines in that film . The Third Man, music gives me goosebumps. Four Weddings, Simon Callow is brilliant and John Hannah reduces me to tears.

nigglynellie Sat 07-Sept-13 09:32:28

Brief Encounter - I absolutely LOVE it and shed tears eveytime I watch it!!! I still can't believe the end with Dolly Messinger crashing into 'their' space!! Also the Railway Children, Goodnight Mr Tom, Cassablanca and many others - As you see I am just an OLD romantic!!

The Jazz Singer, with Neil Diamond, have watched it loads of times, never tire of it.

annodomini Sat 23-Feb-13 15:39:11

I was going to add to this but realised in time that it's a resurrected thread and I'd done it before under my other name.

Watched Zulu yet again a few weeks ago - it's still brilliant. Can always watch The Railway Children, the Harry Potters, The Godfather I and II, Prick up Your Ears, Love Actually, and of course Priscilla Queen of the Desert smile (What a seriously weird combination!) My husband can't understand it, he watches a film once and that's it!
I was very impressed by Gary Oldman's Nil by Mouth, but I would never want to see it again. Once IS enough with some things.

Was slightly disappointed with Silver Linings Playbook, although I can watch anything with Jennifer Lawrence in [a bit concerned that she seems to be taking the rom com route these days]. Winters Bone is excellent albeit very bleak. Eloethan; know what you mean; Edward Scissorhands was on the telly the other night when I was channel hopping, but I had no desire to watch it sad.

BAnanas Fri 22-Feb-13 14:34:52

Love the Godfather films can always watch them again. Recently Barry Norman compiled a list of what his top rated British films. Right at the top of the list was a little known Stanley Kubrick film called Barry Lyndon based on a Thackery novel, I loved it, would probably agree with him on that one.

I haven't seen Winters Bone, but did see Jennifer Lawrence in Silver Linings Playbook and she was excellent in that and it's a really good film Will add Winters Bone to my Lovefilm list.
