Educating Rita

Not at all - it is a fantastic film, with my favourite actress, and I'd also watch or listen to it again and again. A special resonance for me as I also went back to studying late- I was so fortunate that my OH was with me all the way - but many of the other mature students experienced similar issues as Rita - as thei husbands became jealous and nasty. Enjoy

I'm listening to it also, Yuletide cards almost done. A very pleasant way to spend a cold afternoon.

I was listening whilst cooking for the freezer, juggling hot water crust pastry and washing up, and washing up, and washing up.

It was very good and worked so well on Radio, I wondered if it started as a radio play. Life would be a lot duller without Radio 4 Drama.

I hope the freezer enjoys its meal, it didn't say thank you!

I identified almost completely with Rita - not that any of my tutors were anything like hers, unfortunately! I don't think my husband was jealous - he just did nothing to help whilst I juggled looking after the home, two small children, a long daily bus journey, and studying. When I started earning, he was very happy to be able to spend most of his own salary on his many hobbies.

It was great wasnt it? I thought Bill Nighy had just the right voice for the part of Brian.

Have seen the film and loved it several times and also been involved in an amateur production. Didn't hear this version but I think Bill Nighy would be ideal. Men always seem so threatened by educated women, yet I'm as attracted by a man's mind as I am by his looks. Actually more attracted, after all you can go on talking long after you're past doing anything else.

I missed that. What a pity. I love both the play and the film and prescribed it for my mature students who identified with it and with Willie Russell's account of his own education in the foreword to the play.
