Has anyone seen it yet ??

Really want to watch this...however I would like to watch the second and third lord of the rings first. The first one was brilliant but I have never got round to watching the full trilogy

I always think back to a conversation I had many years ago about the books. Someone mentioned the violence but I pointed out that all I'd taken in was the beauty of it; Shadowfax, wizards, elves, forests and little people. Haven't we come a long way since the first dreadful cartoon that was made of the book? And, aren't we lucky to live in an age where such wondrous things are provided for us! It doesn't bother me if it isn't as good as LOTR's because you can't improve on perfection anyway .

It's just a lot of material to dump on a children's book to make it into a more adult series of films. Some inventions work really well though. I loved Rhadagast the Brown. They have included all the incidents from the book but with added violence and 'meaningfulness'. I thought the Gollum part was great, Thorin is good and Bilbo and Gandalf of course and a couple of the younger dwarfs are nice looking ...
Anyway, I won't say any more - don't want to spoil anything and everyone will have a different reaction anyway

Can't help but feel that Peter Jackson should have started with The Hobbit as one film and then went on to LOTR's. That would have seemed the logical way to do it. If course he might just tackle The Silmarillion one day . And that would take him forever and we'd all have to move into our local cinema for the duration [with thermos flasks and sleeping bags].I'm still looking forward to The Hobbit, though, probably because my expectation isn't too great.

I loved all the LOTR films (extended versions!) just as much as the books. I've just seen the Hobbit and felt it worked okay but all seemed a bit pointless. Entertaining and I enjoyed it but I probably wouldn't watch it again ever.

A film buff that I once spoke to said I should watch the directors cut of the last LOTR's film as he felt it was the best film ever made. I'm currently wondering what the films would have been like if Ang Lee had directed them or the guy who directed Seabiscuit and the Hunger Games. I can't imagine reading a book and then creating it on screen; that's why I always like to watch 'the making of' bit of the dvd set.

I cried when I had finished reading LOTR as I knew there was no more. When I saw the first film I found it incredibly boring and very self-indulgent. So loved the Hobbit can't decide whether to see it or not.

Given that I loved every minute of Life of Pi but still found 2 hours was a long time 3 hours seems very long [although the LOTR's films could have lasted an eternity and I would have still sat there transfixed]. But Life of Pi is still in my head and I don't want another film to push it out of the way quite yet. I'm assuming that the Hobbit will be on for a few more weeks because there's no way I'm going to miss it [although our cinema tends to have films like that a bit later so I'm sure they'll have it on eventually].

Saw it a couple of days ago. Quite enjoyed it, but it IS very long and I don't think the additions have improved it. I've only recently re read The Hobbit and it's such a simple little story. I've always thought that part of it's charm was that it gave you no idea how important the things that happened would be in the future. A tad disconcerting to see that Gandalf looks older in The Hobbit than he did in LOTR. I mean I know he IS older now but I'm sure he didn't need to look it.

Going on Tuesday, finally! What with flu and family Christmas it's been a long wait!

DS2 and fiance went to watch it yesterday and they enjoyed it so it must be good for him to comment as he is a person of few words when it comes to compliments of any kind.

Must see if my GC would like to take me along to it. If the young ones won't the big one will - she saw all the Ring ones with me.

Loved it,pure fantasy, sound very loud, 2D as 3 D not available but that was good enough for us.
It felt like being back in Lord of the Rings again!

I loved it - saw it last week and have posted about it elsewhere, possibly on the FILMS thread. It was everything I would have wished for. There is ample scope for three films; I did wonder at first but now cannot wait for the next one. But will have to, of course!

And how are they going to get three films out of it?

Oh, good. I'm really glad you enjoyed it. That's a good sign. I'm looking forward to seeing it but wonder how it can match up to LOTR when the Hobbit's such a short book.

Ella46 , I went with my family and friends last evening and it was thoroughly enjoyable - we all came away looking forward to the next in the trilogy.

I wanted to go as I loved the Ring trilogy, but the critics have slated it and it put me off! (What do they know?)

DH and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Wasn't to long in my opinion as some had suggested. Great action, and SFX. The end whilst not exactly a cliff hanger. Leaves you wanting more.

Not yet ninathenana but want to see it. Hope it's a good see will you let us know.
I feel a bit bad that I only nip in and out but would love to know if it's worth seeing.
