Unbelievable in what is always reported to be the richest country in the world. Like Britain they are always interfering in other countries affairs while ignoring their own people.

Flight Behaviour by Barbara Kingsolver is also about struggling along in todays USA.
I watched 10 minutes of it. Too painful. I'm afraid the whole system is set up to make the rich, rich and let the devil take the hindmost.

I recently read 'The Glass Castle' by Jeannette Walls, recoimmended by my American DiL.
It's the most moving account of a dysfunctional, poverty stricken upbringing in Arizona and West Virginia - the poorest state in the USA.
Jeannette Walls tells her story without a trace of self-pity. She became a respected journalist in New York and helped her siblings escape too.

I agree, Obama is very restricted by the American electoral system and not having a majority in the House of Representatives.

It was so depressing I couldnt watch it

It was probably even more shocking because she did seem very articulate and intelligent. I was struck by the family's humour and love in the clip.

It is hard to get out of this situation once in it.It is the equivalent of our 'bed and breakfast' . Not suitable for growing children .

Fancy all that {and no NHS however flawed}.

I do believe Obama is trying to change things for the poor but it is an uphill struggle against the Republicans who seem to blame the poor for their poverty. Similar to the Victorians . I don't think I will watch the programme.

It is that Eloethan. I think Obama would like to do something about it though. But he has such a lot on his plate.
