I hate the overuse of the word 'passion'. Just read in a jewellers window 'diamonds are our passion'. The word gets used a great deal in job adverts - 'Are you passionate about customer service?'

"I'll be (literally) gutted if I don't get through to the next round", as said by almost every contestant on the numerous TV talent / cooking shows.

And those footballing clichés: sick as a parrot; and over the moon. And why do those making a big effort always have to dig deep? One of my favourites was when an athletics commentator at (I think) the Montreal Olympics, stated that high jumpers were achieving 'greater height in depth.

Weather presenters saying that winds are going to ease up, meaning that they are going to get stronger!

Oh the Devastated word is certainly overused - 'She lost her purse, she was devastated' NO NO NO you lose a member of your family you are devastated, you find out you have cancer or your husband has a heart attack you are devastated!!!!

'pick it up and run with it' - especially when used when discussing complex situations that need a plan

I also wondered the other night, flicking through the TV channels, whoever thought it a good idea to broadcast a programme called "Shoplifter and Proud" (I didn't watch it).

There was a programme the other night called something like 'Inside A Nightclub Toilet !!
