Classic comedies on the radio

Papaoscar it was Ben Lyon and Bebe Daniels his wife in 'Life with the Lyons' their daily was Molly Weir (as Agie), also I think Vic Oliver was in it too.

Before I retired about 4 years ago I used to give reminiscence talks to clubs all around the south east, but once my 2 grandchildren arrived my services were needed elsewhere.

I can tell you lots about the past, but b****r all about modern day shows !

Radio 4 Extra are airing some of them, have just listened to "I'm sorry I'll read that again" as I couldn't stand the braying that was accompanying the start of the Budget speech.

Can't even be arsed to play budget bingo today.

Now, for more radio memories...a Canadian couple, Ben & ?, Wilfred Pickles - Workers Playtime with 'What's on the table tonight, Mabel?, George Cole and Sykie the dog?, Jewel & Warris, Roy Hudd, Sam Costa when he used recorded clever comedy clips to back up his light music programme. All brilliant!

I shall continue to dig away in the old mental software. The bottom of the this particular mine of pleasure is not yet in sight!

Not sure what John Finnemore is doing on the radio at the moment but I find him very funny.

And of course Hitchikers Guide started on the radio as well.

I think that Count Arthur Strong was good on the radio but not on tv.I did try to like it, but think the radio was the best medium for it.To be honest, I think the same for Tony Hancock [Hancocks Half Hour.] I liked Take It From Here when young [Ron and Eth] and The Clitheroe Kid. Some of Round The Horn I found funny, and bits of it not [thought Rambling Sid Rumpo very unfunny and still do.] Liked The Navy Lark though.Dad's Army was on the radio in about 1974, but actually worked better on tv.Loved the BBC radio adaptation of Diary Of A Nobody [read by Arthur Lowe] just brilliant.In fact I had always thought Mr. Pooter would sound like Arthur Lowe!

Well, a few of todays tv comedy series started on the radio, the best known of recent years probably being Little Britain [I bought the tapes years ago but must admit that I never got round to listening to them; must dig them out].More recently Count Arthur Strong [which I loved] transferred from the radio. Comedies tend to start life on BBC3 these days so no idea what will happen in the future .

It was 'Take it from here' Papaoscar - with Jimmy Edwards, June Whitfield and Dick Bentley. I am sure nowadays with all the pc brigade we wouldn't be allowed to laugh at Ron !

Whenever I hear any of Hancock's Half Hour I can almost read the script ahead of them, as I can remember all the jokes.

They were classic days. Very little amuses me now other than 'Just a Minute' and Paul Merton is a favourite.

We went to see Gyles Brandreth recently in a one man show touring the country and he was excellent too.

Yes, NanKate , Round the Horn was amazing, I don't know how they got away with it. I also liked the Navy Lark, the Goon Show, Ray's a Laugh, Al Read, and Hancock's Half Hour. I remember the Glums, with Ron and Ef, but what were they in? And there was the Clitheroe Kid, Educating Archie and Take it from Here. All great memories, and I'm sure there are manymore.
