Have to say I didn't like Mary's jacket either and they are usually very appealing. I agree Lona that she is being downplayed rather. I saw her live at the Birmingham Good Food Show this summer and she did come across as a less dynamic personality than I expected (cannot really explain without being ageist and this is not the place). Perhaps that is allowing Himself to rule the roost, he certainly has an unappealing swagger IMO.

* sparkygran* I've got a recipe for that kind of Angel cake in my (very old) Mrs Beeton's book. It must be a pared down version sizewise. Needs quarter pint of egg whites. I made it once, thinking it was my sort of Angel layer cake - seem to remember it was tough and boring.

Once upon a time in the dark ages I made an Angel cake it required 13 egg whites - can`t remember what else probably sugar - it was magnificent - just needed to share since jingle flagged up Angel layer probably not the same at all anyway hey ho

I love shop bought cake. Especially Angel layer. And lemon Madeira (butter).

Not sure about the jacket - I certainly wouldn't wear it, but it kind of suited Mary.

I couldn't help noticing that she was wearing false nails last night though - hope she doesn't when she's cooking!

Just read that Mary Berry's M&S bomber jacket shown last night has sold out today! I wasn't keen on that one, but some of her more fitted jackets suit her, I think.
The Bake-Off is a close run thing now, all being of similar ability, not sure who will win.

I might just do that gillybob DH doesn't mind a "bought" cake as long as he keeps his sugar levels up

I have just found out that the flat I was thinking of buying in the village was originally part of the workhouse. They were the cottage homes for children in the grounds. What is now the library was the Union office.

Now I need to look at the inmates. I have been in a workhouse without knowing it. It was the children's ward in the hospital when I was five.

If you have a Morrisons near you Deeda just go and buy one and stick a little pink rose in the top of their "festival cake" exactly the same, and quite delicious.

A really interesting programme and how fascinating to learn that the forebear who put his family into the workhouse was made to pay for their upkeep.

It was a really good programme. Interesting about the workhouse. Recently workhouses have been portrayed in a better light and I expect some were. But the Norwich one was particularly awful.

A paricularly sad experience for Mary Berry, DJen, which reminded me how truly awful social conditions were for many ordinary people in the not-so-old days. An absolute disgrace, callous and cruel treatment by the authorities of the times, which we should never forget.

Did anyone see Mary Berry on WDYTYA tonight?
She cried at the idea of her forebears being in the workhouse. And she actually looked at both sides of her family, not just one person.
It was very interesting. Will not spoil it any more for those who have recorded it.

DH wants me to make the Princess Cake - I think this says more about him than it does about the cake

The princess cake looked far too sickly for my taste. The savarins were a different matter though.

A light touch worked that time.
