JL Christmas ad

Ah well, I still like it. The RBL wouldn't have worked on it with Sainsburys if they had thought it tasteless and I respect their viewpoint. Profits from the sale of the "WW1" chocolate bars (made in Ypres) will be going to the Poppy Appeal. And apart from these, I for one won't be buying any more than I usually do from Sainsburys when I add a few of those to my online shop.

I totally agree with nightowl.It is a lovely piece of film but to link it to a supermarket advert is in very bad taste indeed. My grandfather was killed in 1917. Why ? So that we can all shop at Sainsbury's rather than
Tesco's? The British Legion don't always get things right and I feel an apology is called for here.

Why should a penguin make me want to go and shop at John Lewis? If I feel like shopping there I will. In fact I am going there next week (to take something back!).
I sent our penguin back to the Antarctic years ago (he said he was getting too hot in a bin bag in the attic).

I don't think it did advertise. It wouldn't make me shop at Sainsburys any more than the other ads would make me shop at those supermarkets.

I too think the Sainsbury ad is beautiful and moving, it makes all the others look crass.

I saw the advert last night and felt very emotional. But when the message at the end was shown, and I realised it was an advert for Sainsburys I felt quite sickened. In partnership with the British Legion or not I felt it was in very poor taste to use such heartbreaking scenes to advertise a bloody supermarket.

So moving, in tears. X

Maggemaybe - yes, I saw the Sainsbury's advertisement and yes, I wept. My maternal grandfather was captured in April 1918 and spent the remainder of his war in a German prisoner of war camp. He told me his captors were 'just lads like us". The captors and prisoners shared what little there was, including the red cross parcels, boiled grass and rats. He was a lovely man, and that blinking advert had me right back there, in conversation with him

Was impressed with the Not on the High Street one tonight. [Wonder how long it will be before they ARE on the high street]. By the way, realised that Hawkins Bazaar are open again [which solves all of my stocking filler problems].

Did anyone see the Sainsburys Christmas ad earlier this evening? Sainsburys always wait until after Armistice Day to release their ad - still way too early in my opinion, but at least they don't join the unseemly scrum the week before.

No doubt the cynics will hate it, but it had me in tears. And the message is a good one.

Deedaa that must be really annoying for you, especially when you want to discuss the play afterwards.I am like you with ads though, even if I like an ad I rarely remember what the product is, because advertising has changed and is now a subtle message [well, usually.] Car ads are the worst, I never realise what kind of car they are showing.The days of Beanz Meanz Heinz and Persil washes whiter are over.

I enjoy seeing what people have done and how they've done it feetlebaum although I often end up being so interested in how the ad has been put together that I completely miss what it's advertising

I never go to the theatre with DH because he spends the evening watching the lighting and seeing how many cues they miss!

he Christmas commercials - I just think it's nice to see what the creatives can do with a bit of a budget. Consider the work and the planning that goes into everything you see... pity some of it doesn't go into what you hear, but still...

DH suddenly noticed with horror, last night, that there were a lot of Christmas advertisements on TV. (We hadn't recorded "Downton Abbey" - which we usually do in order to fast forward through the adverts)

He'd managed to ignore the fact that I had made a large, brandy soaked fruit cake last week, or that a lot of things are arriving by mail order...

Well the ad to beat all ads (in my humble opinion) was on last night,once you see The Coca Cola Road Train Ad with the smiley Father Christmas on the back you certainly know Christmas is not too far away.
