JL Christmas ad

I am an empty nester.
I have taken to placing the stuffed toys[those that are still left here], in most of the rooms of the house as reminders of them. So I can go inwardly ah as I pass.
[heck, I sound mushy]

I wish we still had DD's large toy penguin. I could have fetched him out of the attic and been fashionable for once!

...I can't get the music from the JL add out of my head; and I hate it . Grrrr.

Same as Ana I would have to travel too far to a JL store, so don't shop there, and only maybe visit a Waitrose a couple of times a year.I buy from Debenhams because I like the goods [and the store is near] despite any ads, not because of them.

The Debenhams one didn't do it for me.Last years M&S was really good, but not so much this year. As some have said, only an advert after all, nothing to get worked up about. I love the JL one, and I like the song as well [and the singer.]I would still like the ad, even if I was on my own totally.My DGS had a 'doggy' that he used to take everywhere, a bit like the penguin in the ad.I also love the Harvey ad [the dog and his soft toy friend, the rabbit.]I want a dog just like him.

We did 'media studies' in the infant school during the Autumn term to show children how packaging and adverts can 'trick' people into buying things. IMO the reason big business and finance ridicule media studies is because they know it will reveal their devious ways!

My daughter liked stuffed toys the most of all her toys.

no other adverts are allowed to portray lies to such an extent- and to the most influenceable- children (and their parents) should be protected from such blatant lies. Makes me so cross.

Again- just me seeing things differently. I hate those kiddies adverts which show toys making the most amazing stunts- they really want them and on Christmas day find that they are just .... inate bits of plastic, and are so disappointed. And the penguins are wonderful, aren't they- and they will turn out to be just ... very expensive stuffed toys, and end up in the corner of the room with the others. Sad.

Like street name taking on the names of the beautiful things destroyed to build the development- should be tackled by the Trades Description Act as Fraud. bah humbug.

How do you manage without John Lewis?

I'd have to travel miles to the nearest John Lewis, Waitrose or Sainsbury's, so the ads certainly don't persuade me to shop at their stores.

I just like comparing the Christmas ones every year!

I doubt if they are spending any more than the other big stores an supermarkets.

i read today that the WWF is getting a lot more applications for the adopt a Penguin scheme. this is helping to save the Adelie penguin, which is the one used in the ad.

I meant £500,000

I was so shocked I typed $500,00 at first, which is about £30,000 which is more like it imo.

Seven million whole pounds!

If they had donated 6.5 million pounds to Children in Need or another charity and spent £500,00 (more than enough) on a bloody advert I would have felt more inclined to shop there this Christmas.

Am I the only one who only watches about 4 adverts a year?

I'm just wondering do they have proof that these ads work? ....well I suppose they must like penstemmon says otherwise they wouldn't do it. But how do they know?

Oh, just seen the Waitrose one - I actually cried!

Just the right message, without being OTT (senders of US-style round-robin might do well to take note...)

They are only ads for heavens sake , don"t think we should spend too time evaluating them.

That's true enough Jenty61 but I don't think shops would shift much stock by showing us a lot of sad people eating a lonely bowl of soup. If they didn't shift the stock there would be even more people having a rotten Christmas because they would have lost their jobs in the shops. We could agrue this one out for ever.

Not very xmasy at all! Also it portrayed love and companionship which I thought was a bit 'in your face' especially when you consider how many people will be alone at xmas through no fault of their own!!! ��
