Keith Richards in Desert Island Discs

"Keef" does look like a lovable.rogue in the Sunday supplement not sure I could have handled him. Good to hear he is devoted to his wife.....she must be a saint . He does come over as fascinating and cuddly in old age.

I've just listened to it, just as good as everyone says.
I was interested in his comment on the arthritis in his hands - not painful, he said "benign."
I have the same thing, sometimes painful at first then settles down.
Maybe I'll go back to the piano again.

Rolf Harris also chose three of his own songs and Engelbert Humperdinck
chose one of his own songs and his book of choice for the desert island was his own autobiography! Sorry I'll go away now.

jane I couldn't quite believe that Norman Wisdom one. Someone liked themselves didn't they?

Katy I also noticed that among Keith's choices were several songs he had recorded himself, but he chose recordings done by others for his list.

Nothing to do with Keith Richards but when I was looking on the site, I noticed that when Norman Wisdom was on (his second time) out of his 8 music choices, 5 were of himself singing

Gill - I wonder whether he always spoke like that, I think Paul McCartney's speech has changed too, become very precise and careful.

He is a great collector of rare gardening books,that is how he had his accident falling off the ladder in his library.....very rock n roll! You are right elena he wasn't pretentious or wittering on, he was just a bloke who is lucky enough to make a living doing what he loves. Obviously fond of his dogs too which is a plus in my book.

I really enjoyed the programme. He doesn't take himself seriously at all, but he is not frivolous or stupid - he is serious but not solemn about his music, and I loved his light touch. I laughed a few times at his chuckle, and when he said he loved his guitars (about a 1000 of them!) like lovers, 'but not like that....I don't take it too far!'

Tricia If you miss it, Desert Island Discs has a website and you can catch up on any ones you have missed (going back years). That's where I listened to the Keith Richards one I think they put the new ones on there a few days after they have been broadcast.

It was a great listen. It was an almost surreal experience hearing Keith Richards on Desert island Discs. He came across as well spoken and obviously had a very happy childhood and spoke very warmly of his Mother and her influence on his musical tastes. So sad about the infant son who died all those years ago, i dont remember hearing about that. I have always had an affection for the old rogue and this programme just made it more so. He was very unpretentious. And his wheezy laugh.....

I missed it! But I think there's a repeat on Sunday, I heard last week he was going to be on.

I heard it, too - great music choices. I'm enjoying his new album 'Crosseyed Heart' which was released a couple of weeks ago. Some very (unintentional) funny lyrics but it's really grown on me. He's never been much of a singer but his guitar playing makes up for that.

He's so funny with his skull rings and a taste in interior decoration which veers between 70's 'Ice Storm', set of 'Pirates' and The Voodoo Lounge.
I recall an interview with his wife telling of his reaction when he learned she had bladder cancer. Apparently he just fell apart and couldn't cope, leaving much of the care and practicalities to her daughters. I don't think that he is very emotionally strong but oh boy, the music.

Made me recall his his old quote about Brian Jones too, something about knowing he wouldn't make old bones. I never had any doubt that Richards would. Despite his emotional frailty (addictions etc) he is clearly a survivor.
