I really think this is so good a series that it deserves a thread of its own despite being mentioned in passing in another thread.

Everything about it is excellent from the costumes, the scenery and dialogue. Above all though is the perfectly cast characters - all of whom seem to look exactly as they should! I think Inspector Bucket is my special favourite but all of them have the faces and bearing and delivery of the lines exactly as they should have.

The clever knitting together of so many Dickens' characters is brilliant and I shall be so sorry when it ends. I think the great man himself would be very pleased if only he could see it.

We will all have to watch tomorrow. This is the cleverest concept for a drama I have seen for a long time. I did not expect Inspector Bucket to do that. The clowning of the Bumbles sits in great contrast to the straight drama between the two Barbary sisters which was so well acted.

Yes those pies do look delicious! Mind you, hygiene was probably a bit at a premium!!!and maybe overtones of Sweeny Todd, you can never quite tell with victorian England!!! shock
Thank goodness Inspector Bucket had a good heart! The idea of poor Mrs Crachit going to the gallows was more than we could bear. That other criminal would have hanged anyway, so........ At least it answered how she popped up in Christmas Carol seven years later!!!!

Thanks * niggly* Oscar Wilde it was, he said so many brilliant quotes including ' either that wallpaper goes or I do' shortly before he died.
Oliver Twist now out on the street, he will meet Dodger ( or will he, as Sykes told him to run away.)
Yes Moscow obviously agreed with Inspector Bucket, he looked rested and restored.grin
I keep wanting to eat pie, they feature so heavily in the programme.

I think we can abandon the "no spoilers" thing! Any info welcome. grin

Poor little Oliver Twist. sad

Badenkate Sat 20-Feb-16 10:54:26

I don't think this counts as a spoiler because it is in the book, but Compeyson is the other convict associated with Magwitch. And I think Magwich kills him in the end. Knowing that I watch it thinking 'you're going to get your just desserts at some point'!!

nigglynellie Sat 20-Feb-16 10:28:56

Oscar Wilde roses!! This quote neve fails to make me laugh!! FHS, Is this wedding going to be like Jane Eyre with, perhaps, Arthur, at last pulling himself together, facing up to Comperson and spilling the beans about his marriage? Why didn't he tell Mathew? Perhaps he did when we were otherwise occupied with the hideous Bumbles, who are acted superbly as they all are. Really looking forward to tomorrow, when all should be revealed!

I think this program is a masterpiece and was surprised to discover that the writer was Tony Jordan who writes Eastenders (which I don't watch) but I guess human behaviour has not changed much over the years, and if he were alive today Dickens would be writing a tv soap set in London!
As all of our book club members are enjoying Dickensian we have chosen 'The old curiosity shop' as our next book.
Maybe we will get a second series next Christmas!

Loved the last scenes with the Bumbles -and I was right - the lovely wee boy with the big eyes turned out to be Oliver Twist! smile

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 19-Feb-16 15:41:18

It was brilliant last night! I hope there's another series, but it will be hard to top this one for meshing all the stories.

It feels like all the stories are coming to an end one by one and like any Dickens novel, so far there's been no happy ending - not even last night, not if you think about it.

Gagagran Fri 19-Feb-16 15:21:07

I get so engrossed in each episode that it's a real shock when the credits roll. Looking forward to Compeyson getting his comeuppance now cousin Matthew's back. (Hopefully). Superb series!

Marelli Fri 19-Feb-16 14:20:30

Oops - it's on tonight, then Sunday for 50 minutes. smile

Marelli Fri 19-Feb-16 13:28:42

According to Radio Times tonight is 19 of 20 episodes, yet on looking at next week's RT, it's not there.... confused

Elrel Fri 19-Feb-16 12:30:31

Imperfect - I just caught up with last night's episode, agree with you! Can't comment for fear of spoilers but looking forward to tonight's!

Imperfect27 Fri 19-Feb-16 09:05:31

If you are keeping up with this - I thought last night's episode was brilliant ... won't give anything away, but so well acted yet again and more story twists and turns to keep us hooked until the last. I've heard there are 18 episodes so that must mean tonight certain things come to a climax ... but I also hope there are sufficient loose ends to warrant another series.

nigglynellie Mon 15-Feb-16 10:23:48

OH that is a point! I'd forgotten about the forced confession, that will explain how the Cratchits all appear intact several years along the line only two more episodes for all to be revealed, or not!!!

starbird Mon 15-Feb-16 01:44:00

Pittcity you are right, the other police won't want to lose face so they'll tell Bucket he's wrong and whichever Cratchett it was ( or whoever else) will get off Scott free.

Marelli Sun 14-Feb-16 20:17:35

Got it! Thanks, J52. smile

Pittcity Sun 14-Feb-16 17:26:59

Haven't the "real police" already beaten a confession out of somebody? In that case Bucket need not turn Mrs C in......

Greyduster Sun 14-Feb-16 14:14:34

Perhaps it was the mammoth catch up that did it; perhaps I'm not the Dickens fan I thought I was and I won't be watching the rest. DH, on the other hand, is enjoying it, so I'll take myself off and watch something else.

nigglynellie Sun 14-Feb-16 10:26:35

I agree Gagagran (I'm sure you're not!!!) I can't understand wading through a series that you can't stand. Can't wait for it to end?! Why watch any more of it?!! !
I too am a great Dickens fan, having had it read to me from an early age and continuing throughout my adult life. If I didn't like it , I wouldn't watch it!!
The eldest Cratchit son did it?! There's a thought! Roses, I'm pleased to see Inspector Bucket back from Moscow, clearly refreshed by his stay! He's certainly very versatile!!!!!!

Gagagran Sun 14-Feb-16 09:32:50

Greyduster I am really puzzled why you would watch something you don't like. Why not just turn it off? I love Dickensian especially the first class acting and costumes but then I am a big Dickens fan and have enjoyed the clever way the characters from different books have been interwoven to come up with a completely new story. It has been a real highlight of the week to watch and enjoy for both DH and me.

Marelli Sun 14-Feb-16 09:18:54

I'll try that, J52.

Greyduster Sun 14-Feb-16 09:12:44

We had a mammoth catch up yesterday, thanks to DH, and by the end of it I was sick to death of all these awful people. I now don't give a toss who did it and can't wait for it to end!

J52 Sun 14-Feb-16 09:10:01

It should be there. When you click on the first menu picture for the series, episode 16 appears. It assumes you want to watch that, but under the big picture for episode 16 are little pictures, number 17 is the first one of those.

That's probably as clear as mud!

Hope you find it.

Marelli Sun 14-Feb-16 07:43:00

My Virgin catch-up must be on a 'go-slow' J52. hmm
