I really think this is so good a series that it deserves a thread of its own despite being mentioned in passing in another thread.

Everything about it is excellent from the costumes, the scenery and dialogue. Above all though is the perfectly cast characters - all of whom seem to look exactly as they should! I think Inspector Bucket is my special favourite but all of them have the faces and bearing and delivery of the lines exactly as they should have.

The clever knitting together of so many Dickens' characters is brilliant and I shall be so sorry when it ends. I think the great man himself would be very pleased if only he could see it.

I agree Printmiss. I shall look for the DVD once it's finished and rewatch it.

Love it. It's extremely well done. I agree about Pauline Collins, and love the scenes with her and Silas Wegg, and also the Bumbles are great with Caroline Quentin. Just wish the Beeb had given it a regular slot instead of it being all over the place. I am constantly having to check to make sure I don't miss it.

I really love it, it's brilliant.?

I'm just wondering if Abel Magwitch will make an appearance. I have only watched up to episode 8 on catch up. I will try to see the latest episodes over the weekend. He was Compeyson's accomplice and escaped the prison ship at the same time as Pip met Magwitch in the churchyard. Compeyson's is a thoroughly bad lot!

PRINTMISS Sat 23-Jan-16 08:17:03

This is really good television isn't it? Last night I was completely lost in the story, the atmosphere is almost compelling. I know there are several more episodes, but I shall hate it when it is finished I know.

Imperfect27 Sat 23-Jan-16 08:12:33

P.S. Remember -I am only on episode 8, no spoilers please if /I have missed something vital! grin

Oliver cannot have been in the past as, if the story developments lesad to the same final outcomes, Nancy is murdered by Sykes ...

That would save a hanging if she is the murderer of Marley ...

Already very sorry for Miss Havisham and seeing a firm link with her wedding day disappointment!

Gagagran Sat 23-Jan-16 08:05:49

It's just an excellent quality production and I love it. I think Bill Sykes killed Jacob Marley on Fagin's orders. Fagin burnt the cosh used in the attack on his fire after Inspector Bucket visited, to question him.

The only slight criticism I have is that Arthur Havisham is getting on my nerves - there's a bit too much focus on him and the dastardly Compeyson.
I love the Bumbles but my favourites are Silas Wegg and Mrs Gamp - Pauline Collins deserves an award for her portrayal.

We are all assuming that this is set before the books and I can see that it is in the case of Scrooge ( I am glad we know how it turns out for Tiny Tim) and Miss Havisham, but could the other books have already happened?
If Mrs Bumble gets her maid then we know Oliver was in the past.

Just catching up with Dickensian on iplayer and enjoying it so much want to ration the episodes - so tempted to watch it all in one big sitting, but have number nine to look forward to next.

Like others, I think the casting is superb and I love the interplay of characters from different stories. I am fascinated by the development of Sykes character.

Good to know the nation is gripped! Better than the 'Who shot JR?' saga to my mind.

Does anyone else think Nancy might be guilty ...?

whitewave Sat 23-Jan-16 04:21:11

Well hasn't it got to be someone who is not major player in any of his books? As otherwise how can they exist in the book - having been hung for murder

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 23-Jan-16 01:21:31

I haven't got a clue who the murderer is? Is Fagin too obvious?

Who do you think it is?

Cracking episode tonight. It's really building up an atmosphere!

Elrel Fri 22-Jan-16 23:50:26

Love it! Miss Havisham gets a backstory, and a first name. Makes me want to read more Dickens. Hope we see more of Dodger.

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 09-Jan-16 13:53:03

I agree. Period Drama is on a par with Romantic Comedy for my DH, but he's enjoying Dickensian. grin

cornergran Sat 09-Jan-16 05:42:46

Love it. A rarity in that DH also enjoys it so one we watch together. smile

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 09-Jan-16 01:15:04

It's very cleverly done and the best thing on TV at the moment. I just wish the BBC would stop changing the time it's on. There's lots of episodes to go yet, so I hope it will settle in to a routine soon.

Stephen Rea is great, but so many characters are, especially when the focus is on them. Pauline Collins is superb, as is Robert Wilfort as Bob Cratchitt and Christopher Fairbanks as Silas Wegg. And Ellie Haddington as Fanny Biggetywitch really gives me the creeps! grin

Topnotch cast. wink

Greenockgran Sat 09-Jan-16 00:22:25

I love this. I am a Charles Dickens fan, and I thought it would be poor, but hats off to the BBC for making such an enjoyable programme.

durhamjen Fri 08-Jan-16 22:33:32

He's actually in War And Peace as well. He was in Michael Collins and the Crying Game ages ago. He was also Richelieu in the Musketeer, quite scary.

durhamjen Fri 08-Jan-16 22:27:25

Inspector Bucket is Stephen Rea.

katie1 Fri 08-Jan-16 20:24:01

Thank you HildaW, Alan Armstrong is very good playing any character. I wondered what the actor who plays Inspector Bucket has been in? Yes, I feel sorry for Mr Bumble, trying very hard to please Mrs Bumble and getting it wrong....
