I watched the first series because it was compulsive viewing, but found it v disturbing. Now I'm thinking, Do I watch the next, or leave it alone? Out of interest ,does anyone else share that view.

I found that Sarah Lancashire did most of the mumbling last night. I had to have it on with sub titles and I also turned up the sound but I did enjoy it.

Jing - it's filmed around the valley surrounding Hebden Bridge. Hebden is a thriving community though the surrounding area suffers from high unemployment, poverty etc with the inevitable drug issues that go with that. I read that Sally Wainwright named it Happy Valley as it's known ironically by that name (by the police no doubt)
The murder scene was realistic wasn't it!
Great episode last night

Jingl, I read somewhere that Happy Valley is the local nickname for the area where they film the programme, but why, I don`t know. I found the dialogue a bit easier to follow tonight, but still had to turn the volume right up.

I agree with you Ana - but that's what TV drama is all about isn't it? It would have been "nice" if he had just held back from throttling her and frightened her enough for her to drop her silly ideas and all back off and get on with their lives, but that doesn't make a good drama.

Personally, I think that the more far fetched it is the more popular it becomes in the ratings even if they just reflect the likes of us saying "ooh that's not very reaiistic" at the end of the day ratings are what it's all about [sigh]

I do think the Mr Molesley (don't even know what his name is in this) sub-plot is very unrealistic, silly and unnecessary.

There's enough going on to keep our interest as it is.

Why is it called "Happy Valley"? Is it a joke? confused

ninathenana Tue 16-Feb-16 22:21:20

Will he try a cover up ????

Pittcity Tue 16-Feb-16 22:08:47

Oooh, Mr Molesey! shock

I really enjoyed that, caught up this afternoon.

I thought it crossed over from the series 1 perfectly and I was surprised how many characters were kept in from series 1. Good writing, good acting as previous series but yes mumbling was annoying.

Can't wait for second episode, good stuff.

Glad we're not the only ones who couldn't hear most of the dialogue, as they mumbled and spoke too quickly, (especially Sarah Lancashire). It wasn't the accent either as we're both from Yorkshire!

Luckygirl Fri 12-Feb-16 12:03:34

I too couldn't hear much of it - we will put the subtitles on next time I think!

matson Fri 12-Feb-16 11:39:35

Enjoying second series so far, but found some of the dialogue very mumbly and couldn't hear it... glad to hear others found the same problem , hope it doesn't continue this way or it will spoil the series for me.

Luckygirl Fri 12-Feb-16 10:49:15

OK - I'll start doing my revision!

Alima Fri 12-Feb-16 10:33:38

Luckygirl, there will be a test later on..........

Luckygirl Fri 12-Feb-16 10:09:50

Thanks all! - I understand it perfectly now! grin

Yes, the young man is uncle of the young boy, (grandson of Catherine), his sister's child. Did he have a girlfriend/fiancee/wife? in the last series.

Who played Catherine's ex-husband in the last series? He had remarried, hadn't he? He was a journalist and she used to meet him and sit in the car with him (a euphemism).

Alima Thu 11-Feb-16 22:05:18

Catherine was married, it broke up under the strain of Cath wanting to raise her grandson(conceived when raped by Tommy Lee). He was often in the last series, hope he is on this one.
The PCSO was the kidnap victim in the first series.
It was the mother of the kidnap victim who died in hospital. The factory boss's daughter was the kidnap victim.
The young man is Cath's son.

Thanks for the link, Jalima. Made me realise I've forgotten quite a bit about the first series.

Luckygirl Thu 11-Feb-16 20:55:41

OK - help me here please!

Someone upthread said that it might be difficult to drop in at series two - and they were right. But I am sure that with a few questions I might be able to catch up, so if anyone can help here they are.......

- has Catherine ever been married, or was she a single Mum when she had her DD? - who I gather committed suicide.
- how is the new community police girl related to Catherine?
- who was it that died in hospital? - obviously a relative, but I could not work out which. ife of the haulier boss I guess - but who he?
- is the young man who is crashing on their sofa their brother?

Well - that's a start!

Alima Thu 11-Feb-16 07:45:59

Great link Jalima, had no idea the PCSO was the kidnap victim. That will help in the coming weeks. I am beginning to think they should have shown series one again!

Marelli Thu 11-Feb-16 07:42:12

Guardian link helped a lot - thanks, Jalima. However, would a previous victim of a crime such as kidnapping be allowed to become a PCSO? confused

Elrel Thu 11-Feb-16 01:31:24

Jalima- very helpful link to well written piece from Grauniad, thank you. My only teeny criticism is the 'backyard mystery'. The way some streets in Hebden are built it makes sense, no mystery!

Jalima Wed 10-Feb-16 23:14:41

Yes, it was Ann who was kidnapped by TLR in series 1, she was determined not to be a victim so is now a PCSO, I said 'Really' because I thought that unlikely.
I thought she was going off to university?

Elrel Wed 10-Feb-16 23:13:08

Errm - Ana - Alima's post at 07:12:42, though I could be wrong that the young woman at the dying woman's bedside was the CSO. In fact was it the accountant's daughter who was kidnapped or Gallagher's daughter?? I give up, must start by rewatching series 1 maybe ...

Ana Wed 10-Feb-16 23:11:47

Oh yes, I get it now - I think I just suspended belief for that aspect...! grin
