Ugly House to Lovely House

I've watched this programme since it began and am becoming more and more annoyed. Tonight we had a couple with a run down dark bungalow who were desperate for a lighter more workable living space and three bedrooms. They had a budget of £50,000
A bit tight but doable.
Enter George Clarke and his handpicked architect to sort it out. So what did they get? A very pleasant kitchen/living space where the old extension and bedrooms were with a wildly extravagant industrial aluminium roof that towered over the neighbours. This roof alone gobbled up £38,000 of their budget. The final cost of the build came in at a whopping £90,000!! We weren't shown the redundant kitchen and living room, to be turned into the bedrooms they needed "at a later date" When? They've already spent nearly double their budget.
As the ex wife of an architect who always designs the best solution for the client's needs, tastes and budget while stretching their imagination, I feel strongly that this programme gives architects a bad name. I like George Clarke but anything he gets his hands on always ends up costing the client far more than they planned and seems to be all about the ego of the architect.
Rant over!

i think like you ,no real arcitect would impose their over excited plans on real clients

That extension would have looked fine alongside a converted warehouse but stuck out like a sore thumb in such an inappropriate setting.

I've watched the whole series and like Hannah wonder how the couples deal with going way over budget only to end up with probably years of further development so they can hopefully end up with a finished house.

We haven't watched the show this week and I'm not sure if we will. I don't know why George is bothering with a show like this.

Last week the budget was 60k and the architect spent 90k. And he wanted to hang their bikes on the front of the house???

The first week I didn't like the extension, but the house did look much better from the front with the new cladding and paint job.

This series is not hitting the mark for us.

PS Hannah after the first 2 shows, I would worry that any architect I employed would result in my project going way over my budget. sad

Wilma, it's the job of the architect to stay in budget and to advise the client if their desires are unattainable on that budget. The architect on this programme clearly said the job could just about be done for the money. His design for the roof is what caused the overspend. I wonder if Channel4 are covering the extra but if they are then it's giving the wrong perspective.
Why on earth don't the clients speak up? Too many unanswered questions.

I love George Clarke, and I particularly love Ugly House. I've liked all the designs I've seen so far, and yes, I do believe that you should "push the boat out" as far as you can creatively. However, last night's? No. It was all about the architect, wasn't it? I think I'd shoot him if he went over budget by that much. And he was so condescending in a snide way about the client's taste and George just sat there and sucked it all up!

How the heck did that roof get planning consent?

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 18-Mar-16 10:44:20

Hannah I think the client has to pay because last week George asked the guy about the money and he said something along the lines of at one point they thought it would all stop because they couldn't find the money.

I know most architects wouldn't behave the way they have on the show, but now I wouldn't be able to relax until the job was done. Either way, I'm assertive enough to speak up, but that's all 3 shows now where the job has gone over budget and as you said, it is not a good impression of architects at all. Will watch this week's episode now, so I can see this roof!

I much prefer George in all his other shows.

I've quite enjoyed the previous programmes.

I agree that the last one was silly and irresponsible. However nice the re-design is - and I thought in this case it was rather odd - I'm not sure how helpful it is to induce a couple to spend nearly twice what they had planned on spending. If a nice house is obtained through over spending, I should think money worries can put stress on a relationship.

I've liked the previous architects but I thought this one was rather smug and pompous.

What amazes me about many of these types of show is when it is finished (and usually over budget) it then seems to be filled with new furniture which must have cost another few thousands of pounds. No make do and mend !!

I agree, tiggypiro. When people ask what our building conversion cost I always point out that although we kept within budget, we had downsized which meant buying space saving furniture, storage units, soft furnishings etc., and that pushes the total cost up quite a bit.

It's never just about the build.

The best bit of the programme is seeing some of the stunning homes where they go for inspiration.

Will Alsop is a "starchitect" whose projects are eyecatching and sometimes controversial. He is not typical of the type of architect who usually works on domestic projects and is used to smaller budgets.
