Went to see this with daughter last night (her and I had both read the book) - the female lead (I believe she also has a main role in Game of Thrones) - Emilia Clarke - is just lovely. Sam Claflin great too as the male lead. They both had to act their socks off, given that it's a tearjerker and they're in just about every scene and the story is actually quite basic.

Charles Dance is his dad and can't remember who the actress is that played the mum.

Lovely setting and locations. So I can recommend it, although I had to blow my nose at the end smile sad

Ooh I didn't even know this had been released! May well be going to see it!

The Khaleesi [Emilia, that is...]

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 09-Jun-16 18:39:01

some would say we've seen quite enough of her already. hmm wink

Grannyknot Thu 09-Jun-16 20:00:23

I don't watch Game of Thrones, so she was new to me smile

I've just read this about the book of the same title. Strong stuff by Janice Turner. It's good.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 09-Jun-16 20:20:27

Gk she's the one famous for nudity (in G of T)

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 09-Jun-16 20:21:26

(hence 'we've seen quite enough of her' wink)

Indinana Thu 09-Jun-16 20:30:27

I've never watched Game of Thrones, not my thing at all, so I won't mind seeing her in this. Providing she's good, of course ?

Grannyknot Thu 09-Jun-16 20:40:50

jings o-hoh, I see smile

bags I'd heard that 're the picketing. There was a woman with a disability, in front of us when we left the cinema and I did wonder how she felt about the film.

Grannyknot Thu 09-Jun-16 20:42:19

Meant to add - yes it is a good article.

I thought the book was very disappointing. Certainly wouldn't be rushing to see the film. Jojo Moyes could do much better -and has!

I read the book too. It was OK. Nothing to write home about.

NotTooOld Fri 10-Jun-16 21:51:29

I thought the book was really good. There is a follow up about what happens to the girl (I've forgotten her name) after the man dies I'll get it on my kindle when the price is reduced.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 10-Jun-16 21:53:52

I thought the book was fantastic! The follow up, After You, was very good too.

Grannyknot Fri 10-Jun-16 22:12:46

Her name is Lou (Louisa) but Will calls her Clark smile

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 10-Jun-16 22:19:42

Could be the saddest book I've ever read.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 10-Jun-16 23:00:50

Apart from Black Beauty.

goose1964 Sat 11-Jun-16 09:01:07

haven't seen the film yet but have read the book, it looks like the film plays up the romance where as the book focuses more on the attempts to get Will to accept his situation, the book After You ( the sequel) is far more upbea t, I loved them both

NotTooOld Sat 11-Jun-16 17:53:10

jings - Ah, Black Beauty........sigh.........poor old Ginger....and wasn't there another horse called Merrylegs in it, or am I thinking of another book? I've still got my ancient edition of BB around somewhere, I'll have to have a look.

NanSue Sat 11-Jun-16 18:01:54

Absolutely loved the book. One of the best and very sad. I was disappointed in the film, a lot of stuff was left out

GrandmaKT Sat 11-Jun-16 23:45:19

Camilla Long reviewed it in last week's Sunday Times. She was not keen!

"It is not so much a film as a product, aimed squarely (and this is a startlingly large audience) at housewives and little women who specifically want to leave the cinema feeling emotionally crushed or “in bits”. It is less a feelgood film, more a feelbad film, the latest in a long line of what I call Dignitas romcoms, featuring a broken or physically blighted (usually rich)man who needs to be cured by a pretty (usually poor) young woman..."

I have just bought the book today , not having seen this thread. Also bought The Girl on the train. Wanted a few good books to take on holiday.

DH and I saw it yesterday. There were only 30 in the cinema so it is not exactly a blockbuster but we both loved it.It was straightforward with only one flashback and no silly special effects. I have read the sequel kindly received via GN a year or so ago and so I was interested to know where Lou was coming from without having to read the book. I had not imagined her to look like she did in the film. More a tall blonde. There ought to be more films like this.

I'm reading the book on Kindle at the moment. Now I've learned that he died so its going to be a sad ending.
