Being huge Roald Dahl fans, 6yo DS and I were tremendously excited when we were offered tickets to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory musical at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in the West End.
We had fantastic seats in the stalls (in the centre of row C) so we could see every little detail. The boy who played Charlie is incredibly talented, along with the rest of the cast who brought the show to life with their charisma and wit. Lots of jokes for the adults to enjoy, as well as for children.
The stage and props were spectacular; as we moved onto each room, I could see from the corner of my eye DS's mouth drop in awe. From the chocolate garden, to the army of squirrels, when Violet Beauregarde turns into a blueberry and the moment Mike Teevee shrinks - the list could go on. Each scene was as dazzling as the next.
The show is recommended for children 7+, and although DS is only 6, he has read the book by himself and watched the film. There were moments where the songs were a bit fast and he didn't quite catch the words (I struggled in parts too - so not just children!), but he was so absorbed watching the show, from being overjoyed when Charlie eventually finds the golden ticket to cringing when Charlie reads the book Willy Wonka told him not to touch. This wasn't DS's first theatre show, but it most definitely has become his favourite yet.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is currently taking bookings until 7 January 2017, before it closes at the West End.
