We were lucky enough to get to see the film on Sunday ahead of its opening later this week. I confess that the book isn't my favourite Dahl - I found the giant-speak difficult - even annoying - to read at times. But after seeing it translated to the big screen I will definitely give it another go. (That said, DD and OH both loved the book so they were super excited to see how it would be brought to life)

And the film definitely didn't disappoint. Beautifully shot (but what else would you expect from Steven Spielberg?!), great cast and moments to move you and to make you giggle (I defy anyone not to laugh out loud at the palace tea party scene). Snozcumbers and whizz poppers especially popular with the small folk grin.

A really fab family movie (probably for age 5 upwards - there are bits in giant land that younger children may find a bit scary - that's the perfect treat for the school holidays: DD is already asking when she can go and see it again. (OH was VERY quick off the mark to volunteer to take her too! Bless)

I've been pondering whether I should go and see this or not because movies don't live up to the hype a lot of the time. I am a big Dahl fan but I haven't enjoyed some of the movie adaptations - especially Tim Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

Also, The BFG isn't Dahl's strongest work - like you said, the giant speak is hard to follow and becomes a little tedious in the book! I wasn't sure if this book would work very well as a film. But I'm glad it's good enough for the little ones to enjoy - I'll definitely be taking my grand children while they're off school!

We went on Wednesday and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

We made the right decision to see it in 3D in my opinion.

Easy to recommend this as a good family film, the BFG is adorable (annoyingly I kept getting Mark Rylance image in my head though grin)

All my family have seen this film and thoroughly enjoyed it. So, as I am going to stay with them tomorrow I decided to watch the film on my own and I absolutely loved it. I laughed, almost cried but went home feeling all cuddly and warm. In fact I know what I want for Christmas - my own BFG. Mark Rylance did a really good job as the gentle giant and even my 4 year old GD wasn't scared by the bad giants. So well done Steven Speilberg too. I can really recommend this movie to grandparents and grandchildren alike.

We saw it on holiday in a little local cinema in Aldeburgh. It passed an evening. Wasn't great. Far too scary for little children.

The part where the Queen sent soldiers and helicopters to sort out the bad guys, just like that, made me angry. Distasteful timing.

I know, I'm overthinking it. Perhaps.

Just been to see this with DD and DGD. We absolutely loved it - moving, sad and funny, with fantastic special effects It was a bit scary in parts and there were some small children in the cinema, but it has a PG rating so parents would have known that.

We saw it with other adults (don't ask) and concluded it is aimed firmly at 7 year olds. It sticks very closely to the story as I remember it. Most kids animated films include something to amuse the grown-ups. This did not. Younger children would find it too frightening I think. Older children would be bored silly.
My DS (38) - who has enjoyed other recent children's films, found Sophie very annoying and absolutely hated this film.
It was very much a two-hander with other characters thin on ground (almost non existent) and very peripheral to the Sophie-BFG relationship.
The animation trick of having a real actor playing the giant is clever, but I don't think it stretched the acting skills of Mark Rylance. The giant-speak came out so fluently it was not funny, despite the fact it does come across as funny when you read the book aloud. Not one of Spielberg's best IMO.
