Is this for real - well clearly not it's a drama but I'm only still watching it because I can't believe how truly awful it is shock

maryeliza54 Tue 08-Aug-17 22:42:45

Only me daft enough to ignore the dire warnings of all the reviews blush

devongirl Tue 08-Aug-17 22:52:30

Just watched the first half with my DD - we enjoyed it, reminiscent of John Snape/Colin Fishwick on Corrie!!

ninathenana Tue 08-Aug-17 23:56:05

I watched it and quiet enjoyed it. The plot is feasible, such cases have been reported by the media.
H did complain that it was scheduled to follow Holby smile

I just thought that the early scenes were really hackneyed. Also I don't know of a hospital today where any member of staff would start work without having to produce their passport. I think this issue was signposted in the trailer for the next episode. It just feels brittle and shallow

It seems highly unlikely that even a senior and highly experienced nurse could carry out all the emergency procedures that might be required in an Accident and Emergency department. (Apart from anything else, I think a person who could do this would have the sort of nerves of steel and lack of conscience characteristic of a psychopath - and JW's character isn't portrayed in that way).

I know there have been examples of people masquerading as doctors but were they working in acute, emergency situations?

Also, why would a person resort to such a drastic solution? Given that she was already in deep water, wouldn't it make much more sense to go back to the reporter and help him to expose what was happening?

(I did quite enjoy it though - not quite sure why).

I sort of enjoyed it but it is very unreal I couldn't imagine how simple the interview was, NHS interviews in my experience are always done in front of a panel not one very informal person and there's no way she would have passed off those procedures Why would she choose A and E probably the most likely area to have to do the most difficult procedures Ummmm I m not too convinced
Where did the daughter go while she was at work in a totally new area got her into nursery very easily and falling in love in the first episode ???

ninathenana Wed 09-Aug-17 08:21:06

Bluebelle I wondered to H about the daughter. Perhaps the hospital has a creche.
I don't know about falling in love but certainly giving way to lust.
If she'd followed through with the reporter she would have had no income. I assumed what she did was supposedly a desperate attempt at keeping a roof over their heads.

Ridiculous wasn't it junior doctors often make much more of a mess, upset the nurses and leave a trail of stuff to clean up after them. I shall still watch it though - its something to yell at!

maryeliza54 Wed 09-Aug-17 09:12:22

Sometimes something is so bad its good - this may be one of those things.grin

In my career I have only had a couple of interviews, admittedly in Education not Health. Sometimes they were so desperate for staff it seemed they would take anybody and I started almost immediately. I'm sure if my papers had been false they would have passed! It seems to me that the NHS might be just as desperate these days. Also I have experienced many nurses who seem much more competent than some doctors.
There is so much readily available information online I can see that this deception is quite possible. I have self diagnosed by studying online too and once told the GP who had not heard of the disorder before. I was sent to a specialist and hey I was right!! No I am not recommending this but just saying that an intelligent nurse like this one could easily pass as a doctor IMO.

BlueBelle Thu 10-Aug-17 05:58:11

I think diagnosing through google is very different to doing full on A and E procedures cutting into flesh and crunching complex bone injuries around Grandma and having had NHS interviews in the past that one was laughable
I ll stick with it and see what happens my friend ( we usually chat about dramas) gave up after about 15 minutes
Yes the hospital might have had a crèche but it would have been helpful for that to have been seen or briefly mention instead of the child just disappearing
It was all so fanciful moved to a new area, a new career, a new man, a new home and not a hiccup in sight all happened like magic ..... just like re al life

devongirl Thu 10-Aug-17 17:00:08

What could possibly go wrong.............

LadyGracie Thu 24-Aug-17 17:30:16

I'm still watching this even though I can't believe how far fetched it is! It's utter rubbish but I'll have to watch the last episode to see what happens hmm

grannyticktock Thu 24-Aug-17 20:45:40

I'm enjoying it but I agree it's quite preposterous in places. She'd have had to have a DBS check before starting work. How did she get her child into school or nursery? Where is the child when her Mum has to work unsocial hours or nights (or is hopping into bed with the doctor)? How did she set up a bank account to get her salary paid in to? And above all, was her new lover really the only person who thought to Google this new arrival?

BlueBelle Thu 24-Aug-17 20:57:56

I m kind of enjoying it too grannyticktock although I have all those questions and more, so now she's needed to lie well that should come easy to her ?

f77ms Fri 25-Aug-17 08:20:21

I was looking forward to it , I love a good British drama but this certainly wasn`t one ! What a load of far fetched rubbish which could never happen in reality .

Jane10 Fri 25-Aug-17 09:37:49

I do know a good nurse who blew the whistle on some dodgy practices and ended up being accused of bullying - absolutely untrue btw. I haven't asked her if she's seen the programme as she's still so traumatised by the whole experience. A really good nurse lost. In fact I haven't heard from her for a while, maybe she's away being a doctor!!

varian Fri 01-Sep-17 10:13:24

I've just finished watching the last episode and I did enjoy this series. I assumed that the central character had spent twenty years or so working as an A&E nurse so knew a lot about it. With that experience and a bit of online swotting to fill the gaps in her knowledge would she be able to pass herself off as a doctor? I'd love to know what the medics and retired medics on GN thought of it.

grannyticktock Fri 01-Sep-17 11:14:11

I found the ending a bit of a cop-out. So the senior doctor who'd been found to have an alcohol problem was allowed to choose who would take over her role .... and "Ally" was allowed to continue her stellar career in medicine with no one but her lover suspecting the truth. I'd have liked more of a resolution and a reckoning.

Jane10 Fri 01-Sep-17 11:37:47

It made Holby look like a documentary!!

BlueBelle Fri 01-Sep-17 11:42:18

It was a fairy tale wasn't it ? very lightweight and unreal

Eloethan Fri 01-Sep-17 12:59:38

My friend and I watched it together. We'd both been looking forward to seeing how it would turn out. We thought it was a really annoying and disappointing ending and made both the main character and her boyfriend very unsympathetic characters. Perhaps that was the idea but I didn't like it.

LadyGracie Fri 01-Sep-17 13:47:02

It was dire, I had to watch all four episodes thinking she'd get found out, but no they even killed off the poor child's father so he wouldn't tell. Proper fairy tale!
