300 Years of French and Saunders

Just remembered their version of Guns n' Roses. Dawn made such a brilliant Slash! I laughed out loud at the mention of Trago Mills in the Poldark sketch - you probably need to have lived in Cornwall to get it.
I agree about Jam and Jerusalem. Full of characters I recognise, I don't know why it never gets repeated. The funniest thing was when my friend sent me photos of her son's wedding in Cornwall and it was just like the hippy wedding in J&J!

We recorded it but deleted it after ten minutes, not funny.

I absolutely loved 300 Years of French and Saunders and thought it was the best thing on over Christmas. I love comedy and they are just so good at it. I like everything either of them do.... I am a big fan.

...real humour does have to have that slight touch of pathos imo...

Funny thing about comedy programmes is that I tend not to make an effort to watch a lot of them but enjoy them when I catch them by accident; Would I Lie to You being a classic example. Having loved Motherland, I was surprised to find that DD and DIL both disliked it; too close to home, perhaps? People tend to think of Monty Python being funny [The Holy Grail does have me in hysterics] but a lot of it was just plain silly and not all that amusing.

They are very good at impersonating people but not so good at giving them funny lines. i did not get the shooting Lulu - not at all funny.

Tegan Like you, I really liked Jam and Jerusalem and agree that it was underrated.

There are a few French and Saunders sketches that I found funny. One was of the two of them dancing round their handbags and the other was a parody of the film The Piano, which I found hilarious. It put me off seeing the film, which was silly of me because when I did eventually watch it I really liked it.

Much of their humour I find difficult to stomach.

I quite like the Vicar of Dibley but wouldn't make a special effort to watch it.

I think Ab Fab was 'of it's time' [and I LOVED it!] but the Vicar of Dibley, which didn't have the same appeal at the time has now become an all time classic in the Dad's Army mould. Jam and Jerusalem was superb [and is still underrated imo]

Isn't it strange I thought much the same. Do you think people are either French and Saunders fans or Vicar of Dibley fans?

Deedaa Mon 01-Jan-18 21:29:21

I love French and Saunders but always found The Vicar of Dibley very laboured and un funny.

I could never really get into French and Saunders much. Some brilliant, hilarious bits, but I found a lot of it boring.

DanniRae Sun 31-Dec-17 16:19:21

We turned it off because it just wasn't funny. I also loved Dawn French in the Vicar of Dibley and often watch it on dvd.

Goggleboxers were great Lynbo.

KatyK Sun 31-Dec-17 10:42:44

Glad it's not just me then. I don't find them remotely funny.

merlotgran Sun 31-Dec-17 10:16:38

The Handmaids Tale sketch was funny but I preferred watching Jennifer Saunders and Joanna Lumley having a whale of a time rollicking round champagne vinyards.

Must admit I don’t find them at all funny as a duo. (Dawn French in The Vicar of Dibley was brilliant).

Jane10 Sun 31-Dec-17 07:59:18

I've never found these two funny and always wondered why they were regarded as hilarious by others! Oh well. Horses for courses.

Day6 Sun 31-Dec-17 00:54:56

I can't bear this duo. I think they are highly over rated. Most of their stuff is self indulgent nonsense lacking in wit. I give them a wide berth, always.

Eloethan Sun 31-Dec-17 00:03:22

Sometimes they make me laugh - a lot. But on other occasions I find them gross and extremely unfunny. The sketch in a graveyard I found particularly revolting. I must have missed the really funny bits.

Wasn't it fabulous!! I loved the Goggleboxers!

Thank goodness for this great piece of comedy over Christmas. It was a great look back at some highlights and The Handmaids Tale sketch showed that F&S still have it. Really appreciated being able to sit and laugh for just a short while. Thanks F&S.
