Anyone watching this? Sarah Lancashire is such a good actress I didn’t fall asleep during the first one so it must have been good ?

Nelliemoser Fri 02-Feb-18 00:07:35

Well it was not just me then. I thought I'd had a quick doze and missed the "punchline" as it were.

Not a patch on Happy Valley. (Which I hope won't be resurrected) as much as I enjoyed it.

It is annoying when they leave it to the viewer to tie up the loose ends and work out what will happen. That's the job of the writer, and not to do it is a cop-out. I found it frustrating that we didn't know whether the real killer would confess (or be denounced) ; the social worker, who was the central character at the start, was cast adrift and became just collateral damage. Pity, because some parts of it were very good.

When the credits started to roll, I looked at my daughter and said "And? What are we supposed to deduce from that?"

Smithy Thu 01-Feb-18 22:04:48

I agree with Morgana, I feel that a lot of dramas are ending in this manner, up in the air, and it's putting me off getting into more TV drama. I don't believe there will be another series, I think it's the way the scriptwriters are doing "modern" drama series.

Iam64 Thu 01-Feb-18 21:30:43

None so far as I could see Jalima. It was based on the fact he had a history of violence, he "abducted" took the little girl out, then she was found dead. Maybe there will be a 2nd series - I found the son's comments to his mother, that she should always remember that he loves her, no matter what happens chilling. Was he contemplating suicide or informing the police about his father?

Jalima1108 Thu 01-Feb-18 20:03:24

I didn't think that the investigation was realistic.
What was the direct evidence linking the father to the crime?

Iam64 Thu 01-Feb-18 19:58:12

I wondered if the son was being portrayed as a young person with some kind of developmental disorder, Aspergers or Atypical autism for example. His speech patterns, high level of intellectual ability and excellent if patronising/controlling vocabulary could fit that kind of diagnosis.
Whatever, an unsatisfactory ending but maybe there is a season 2 planned.

Morgana Thu 01-Feb-18 19:52:29

Very cross with the rubbish ending. We shall all stop watching series if the ends keep failing to deliver. D.D. is ex social worker and thought it was quite realistic.

Jalima1108 Thu 01-Feb-18 17:24:23

There were so many holes in the story

tinaf1 Thu 01-Feb-18 17:23:19

Really disappointed with the ending is there going to be a series two. Why didn't the police check CCT cameras to confirm the foster mum's story about seeing the dad's car in the area?

Jalima1108 Thu 01-Feb-18 16:52:47

I did recognise it - and some of the other parts eg The Bearpit

Gemmag Thu 01-Feb-18 16:50:02

Jalima.........Maybe I know them!.

There is a Banksy painting in Park st,. It’s a painting of a naked lover hanging out of a window, been there for years.
You might also find one or two of them in the Bristol Museum. You will find loads of graffiti in and around the Stokes Croft and St Paul’s area?.

Kiri was filmed in and around Clifton and on the downs.

Elrel Thu 01-Feb-18 16:01:07

How wrong can I be? I thought earlier that it was compelling and worth watching. Not with that cop out ending. Unless a second series is coming up perhaps.
Some interesting characters played by impressive actors but overall deeply unsatisfying imho, why do they do it to us?
Also I'm still vaguely interested as to where and when each the disfunctional couple found their lover.
Was this thrown together by the same team who did the surgeon rapist one with kayaking Joanne Froggatt? Just as much, for me, a failure to deliver.
Damp squid awards for both series!
PS Did we ever see the backpack Kiri was getting packed to go and stay with Nate?

BlueBelle Thu 01-Feb-18 15:08:33

I though Si was a very very good actor not easy for a young person to play such a creepy perve
It all felt like such unfinished business

mostlyharmless Thu 01-Feb-18 15:06:53

The ending was unsatisfying - but that's life.
The innocent (especially if they're black) get wrongly punished sometimes. The social worker was wrongly punished too.
And the middle class father goes free.
Although I thought the bereaved adoptive family should have been more upset about the death of their "daughter". Very dysfunctional family.
Not a neat ending but perhaps realistic?

gillybob Thu 01-Feb-18 14:32:00

I found him creepy and pervy Luckygirl. remember the scene with his mum in the shower. Yuk.

Also strange when he met the social worker and talked about male rape etc.

Luckygirl Thu 01-Feb-18 14:28:31

I'm not sure the father will be convicted - they have a crack lawyer on the case, and it will be clear in court that the person who said she had seen his car could have a motive for lying.

I do not think the ending was cut and dried - I think it left a question mark.

I thought the acting was excellent - particularly the son Simon, although he did come across as rather more sophisticated than most teenage boys I have met.

seacliff Thu 01-Feb-18 13:12:56

It was promising at first ... but very annoying rubbish ending. What is the matter with these broadcasters, thinking that is acceptable as entertainment. Someone was paid lots of money for that ... not good enough.

OldMeg Thu 01-Feb-18 13:09:56

Oh dear! What a bum ending ???

Jalima1108 Thu 01-Feb-18 13:00:18

Nelliemosar.....I don’t know which part of Bristol you visited but next time you do try visiting Clifton. No one in that part of Bristol will think you a posh person from the Midlands
Although some of my friends from the Midlands live there Gemmag wink

Jalima1108 Thu 01-Feb-18 12:57:56

I am astonished that no forensic tests were mentioned (or did I miss that?).

Iam64 Thu 01-Feb-18 12:54:29

I started and ended feeling disappointed. We're used to police and social workers being portrayed as hopeless and with no attempt at realism but, this hits new lows. I also felt that despite the authors saying they tried to avoid stereotypes that it was laden down with them. The middle class family were off the wall dysfunctional, the black family were likeable and honest, the social worker had a drink problem and was emotionally over involved, the black police officer was unable to separate her feelings about her own father, from the birth grandfather. I hadn't realised the drama had reached its conclusion last night. Very unsatisfactory, particularly as it means the father, who had been trying to get his life on track, is to be wrongly convicted.

Megram Thu 01-Feb-18 12:43:34

Was getting frustrated watching the last episode as it seemed to jump about all over the place. Hoped for a definitive ending, but was disappointed!

gillybob Thu 01-Feb-18 11:21:58

As Maggie said, I think that maybe they've lost an episode or they think they've show one that they haven't?

Very confusing and annoying.

Smithy Thu 01-Feb-18 10:00:17

This drama looked really promising, but like all of you, I was so disappointed with the end or non-ending. It seems to be the way now, its putting me off watching new dramas on tv.
