I love it, I enjoyed last nights start to the new series. Any other call the midwife fans here ?

Choked. So sad, and so well done. Have got a sore throat from holding the tears back.

appygran Sun 04-Mar-18 22:35:18

Needed a good cry tonight. That did it

morethan2 Sun 04-Mar-18 22:58:02

I’m in the same state as you Auntiflo with a sore throat from trying not to cry, problem is I’ve been feeling a bit low and needed cheering up, this didn’t do it.

Jalima1108 Sun 04-Mar-18 23:11:38

Oh dear. so sad. I thought that Tom and Barbara were so well suited (the characters of course - I know that Jack and Helen are a couple in RL).
sad sad sad

So sad, I shouldn`t have watched really, it brought back too many memories, but I love the programme. Poor Tom and Phyllis.

Eloethan Mon 05-Mar-18 00:58:52

It was very upsetting tonight.

kittylester Mon 05-Mar-18 07:39:23

Wasn't it sad?

I wondered, last week, about the chance of Tom and Trixie getting back together but then Barbara rallied and I thought I had it wrong.

I always watch it with my two daughters. We were all crying. my eldest daughter said she was going to bed now properly depressed.

Maggiemaybe Mon 05-Mar-18 08:04:19

I just knew, when she’d rallied midway through the programme, that she’d have a relapse by the end. sad What an episode - the story of the bullied young dad who wouldn’t be going home for three years was sad too.

I seem to be a lone voice, but I didn’t feel involved last night. I was just too aware all the time of how the writers were manipulating our emotions, and how they were thinking of different ways of writing characters out. There seemed too many themes going on at once, so it was rather bitty. Perhaps I was just in the wrong mood.

sodapop Mon 05-Mar-18 08:43:04

I like a good weepie as well. Last night's episode was excellent I thought, Phyllis was portrayed so well. Think you are out voted Grandma70 I agree there were a lot of themes going on though.

Anniebach Mon 05-Mar-18 08:48:54

But life is like that, it is a community not one family, would have been boring if the hour was only of Barbara dying

ninathenana Mon 05-Mar-18 09:17:18

I've not read any posts about last nights episode and was avoiding the thread until I watch my recording this afternoon.
I opened the paper a few minutes ago and there's a full page article telling me just what I was avoiding finding out gggggrrrrr !!

Lindylo Mon 05-Mar-18 09:46:55

Oh that's awful ninathenana but it's still definitely worth watching.
The acting is so understated that it gets such a powerful message across. This programme is definitely a contender for a television award.

Even DH was blowing his nose noisily at the end. Linda Bassett is wonderful in it.

Hilltopgran Mon 05-Mar-18 11:45:33

I usually enjoy the programme, but this series has had too many sad episodes. So many deaths makes it very distressing for people recently bereaved, it has caused real distress to a relative. I know it is only a programme but is it really Sunday night entertainment.

Shirleyw Mon 05-Mar-18 15:28:24

Yes, very sad, was choked....Very well acted ...next week, the last week, wont be much cheerier either as its the funeral....

Franbern Mon 05-Mar-18 15:43:34

Yes was well acted, but I agree, I felt that we were being manipulated and found it difficult to get any real emotion. Also, surely, her parents should have been called when she was so ill.

nigglynellie Mon 05-Mar-18 16:16:59

I agree, Barbara's parents would undoubtedly have been informed and summoned as she was SO ill! BUT, I wept for Barbara, for Tom Nurse Crane, in fact everyone!! What a terrible disease this was/is. Even fifty years along the line it is still a killer. I know at times C.T.M is a bit dismal, but Nurse Anderson has found a lovely group of friends, there is hope for the young man and his young family, and Timothy likes the Rolling Stones, so it's not all despair!

Anniebach Mon 05-Mar-18 16:50:52

Summed up perfectly niggly ?

JoyBloggs Mon 05-Mar-18 17:05:11

sad So very sad, but I thought it was very well done. Phyllis is so real... I know it's corny but I really feel I know her! She is a brilliant actress. Don't know if I can bear to watch the funeral next week... I don't usually get emotional about telly dramas, tell myself it's not real, but last night's CTM was something different altogether!

nigglynellie Mon 05-Mar-18 17:27:00

Thanks annie, and as a postscript, the babies and the joy they bring are gorgeous - Quite takes me back!sunshine

loopyloo Mon 05-Mar-18 19:25:03

Oh dear, can I bear to watch this episode now? DH back at work tomorrow so can watch it in peace. Life was hard for so many people and still is.

nigglynellie Mon 05-Mar-18 19:54:04

Oh loopyloo, I'm afraid the game has been given away! sorry!! Do watch it though, but make sure you have tissues at the ready!!! sad

loopyloo Mon 05-Mar-18 19:58:41

It's ok Niggly, I am glad I have been forewarned. It was one reason why I read the thread.
