The current Alfred Hitchcock thread got me thinking about the old, classic films that relied soley on a good story, an excellent cast and very little, if anything in the way of "special effects". I'm a sucker for the old musical films like Philadelphia Story; Calamity Jane and The King & I. Do you have any favourite films? Which are they and why? And, if they've done a modern remake of it, did you rate it. I loved the original Double Jeopardy with Barbara Stanwyck but thought that the remake of it in 1999 was rubbish!

How could I have forgotten about the lovely weepie Goodbye Mr Chips, starring Robert Donat and Greer Garson, such a lovely film, much better than the later remake.

It's Love Story with Ryan O'Neill.
I saw it about 1972 in Liverpool when on my first ever weekend away. I was with my soon-to-be-husband. It was a very emotional film and the lady beside me was also emotional. I could hold the tears back no longer and with them came the gulps and sobs. She was crying also and had her arms around me. I think the two men didn't know what to do with themselves.
Even when it was over and as we left through the foyer I was still sobbing and tears dripping off my chin.

Singing in the Rain, Gigi, High Society, Seven brides for seven brothers, Four weddings and a funeral.

I am the odd one out on Brief Encounter, I think it is one of the silliest films I have ever had to watch.

The Bishops Wife ,with Cary Grant,David Niven and Loretta Young ,its my christmas favourite the remake with Denzil Washinton and Whitney Houston was dire.
Also up there are Guess Who's Coming To Dinner ,Spencer Tracy ,Katherine hepburn and Sidney Poitier ,fabulous film and Spencer Tracy's last speech in it always makes me cry
One I watch over and over agin ,and read the book is To Kill A Mockingbird with the fantastic Gregory Peck .I love old films ,not keen on stuff with loads of special effects that cover up bad acting .I used to collect videos of B/W films and donated them to an Old Peoples home in the early 2000's .I hear they were a great success .

The Graduate.

My very favourite film of all time, and one I have loved since I was a child, was the 1937 version of The Prisoner of Zenda with Ronald Coleman and Douglas Fairbanks. I love a bit of swash and buckle! There was a later version with Stewart Grainger and David Niven. And then? “Rebecca”; and “A Bridge Too Far” for its absolutely brilliant casting.

In more recent times, my favourite film is Local Hero now closely followed by Sunshine on Leith.

They did a remake of Jonny Belinda in the 1980's callgirl. It has Rosanna Arquette and Richard Thomas in it. You can watch it via this YouTube link:

My favourite film of recent times is - When Harry Met Sally

callgirl1 Sun 02-Sept-18 19:57:16

I saw a film on TV many years ago, when I was a teenager, and it was an old film then, keep waiting for it to come on again, but no luck. It`s Johnny Belinda, starring a young Jane Wyman. I loved it. Does anyone else remember it?

annodomini Sun 02-Sept-18 19:50:49

The Philadelphia Story 1940. Cary Grant, James Stewart and Katharine Hepburn.
Re-titled as High Society - musical - in 1956
But I prefer the original for its witty screenplay and the well matched cast.
