I always loved the last night of the proms. All of it really I suppose, but particularly the last night. I love all the pomp and circumstance. I have red button on my telly, so I can also choose where to see it from if nothing interests me in the main prog. I missed it this year tho. I was gutted but unfortunately I was out volunteering and at the moment I cant record so I had to miss it. if I had a computer I could put BBC Player on or whatever they call it, but I haven't. Never mind eh? BIG COL

It was a wonderful evening and how I agree with you about X Factor JessK

I do not spend the rest of the year going around singing, Rule Britannia and waving a Union flag.

Oh dear! I'll remove the Union flag attached to my headband immediately and stop croaking Land of Hope and Glory to the pigeons as I hang out the washing.

Agree with most, very enjoyable indeed!

Jess is great - wonderful personality and amazing skills!

merlotgran Mon 10-Sept-18 10:47:55

We commented on Finlay's voice range not being comfortable with the high notes but this year's Prom was one of the best in a long time so it didn't seem to matter.

I love to see all the flags and don't take any notice of where they're from. As for people who sneer about patriotism, it's one night of the year, just one. I do not spend the rest of the year going around singing, Rule Britannia and waving a Union flag. grin

Wasn't she wonderful.

JessK Mon 10-Sept-18 10:40:29

Jess Gillam was absolutely great. I watched the last night with great joy and it was so much better than watching the wannabes on X Factor!

Jalima1108 Mon 10-Sept-18 10:32:40

Oh dear Luckygirl - well, I enjoyed him anyway grin. I liked the double flag too smile

I thought it would be a good idea to start a thread about the Proms and the music but, oh dear, someone has to come along and try to claim it for Brexit - yet again.

Quite honestly, varian, there are enough threads about Brexit and we are not all obsessed about it to the extent of wanting other threads hijacked on other subjects such as TV, Radio, Film, Arts etc.
but I suppose inevitable.

I thought that poor Finley was struggling with his top notes.

The Express doesn't seem to realise that the Proms have always been a music festival not a British festival. Music by composers of all nationalities is played by orchestras from all over the world. If you have been lucky enough to go to some of the concerts the last night is an enormous party to celebrate the end of the season, not an "Isn't it wonderful that we're all British" gathering. I thought it was great to see so many EU flags and hats. I hope Theresa May was watching!

On a personal note, DiL's cousin was performing this year. Playing the cymbalom which is the national instrument of Hungary. A type of dulcimer with metal wires that are hit with spoon shaped sticks.

Brilliant last night of the proms with patriotic Britons waving theor Union Jacks AND their EU flags - but the Express was not happy!

"The end of Britain’s world famous classical music festival wouldn’t be the same without its famously British traditions.

Each year, the audience within the Albert Hall mark the end of the festival by dressing up, joining in with rousing renditions of patriotic classics and waving the Union flag. However, this year, at the most British of events, as the audience was hearing songs to commemorate the end of the First World War, more than 20,000 EU flags filled the concert hall. The move was part of a protest against the impact that Brexit may have on orchestras."

Listening to the performance of Milton's At a solemn Musick, I noticed the striking euphemism for dying (subject of a recent thread). Henceforth I shall say that someone has been united to God's celestial consort.

Actually, I have a sneaking suspicion that the subtitle spelt out "invite" rather than "unite", giving the impression that some passers away might prefer the Devil's company.

Why did Swansea disappear before the finale?

grannysue05 Sun 09-Sept-18 10:25:03

Wonderful. Just wonderful. So uplifting .

Did anyone see Proms in the Park from Glasgow Green? The Big Noise from Raploch, Stirling played a wonderful selection of Scottish tunes. It was lovely to see those children so engrossed in their music. I shed a little tear.

Greyduster Sun 09-Sept-18 10:12:26

I will look forward to catching up with it sometime today, but I’m afraid I always switch off before the big finale. I hate Land of Hope and Glory as much as Elgar did.

Have never missed the last night (and would love to get tickets) but for some or no reason didn’t watch last night.
Years ago we went to the proms in the park with terry Wogan, it was a wonderful night.

I've always loved the Last Night of the Proms. My Dad used to love it too. Tonight's was wonderful. Great music and singing, and Andrew Davis back conducting. I watched it by myself and had a lovely evening.

I agree. One of the best Last Nights ever. Jess Gillam and Gerald Finley were superb.

Jalima1108 Sat 08-Sept-18 23:23:17

The Last Night of the Proms tonight was just wonderful!

The talented soloists - Jess Gillam and Gerald Finley were magnificent.
Jess Gillam brought tears to my eyes when she played Scaramouche - DH commented that 'she can make that instrument dance!'
Gerald Finley's rendition of the soliloquy from Carousel was so moving; not classical music but beautiful and moving nonetheless.

Andrew Davis, the soloists, the orchestra, the choirs, the Prommers - everyone - thank you!

A wonderful season and not forgetting a thank you to Sir Henry Wood.
