Johnny Hallyday died last year Maw ?

MawBroon Tue 02-Oct-18 20:38:34

Didn’t Johnny Halliday die earlier this year too?

I loved his voice too, that very slight warble reminiscent of Piaf too. He was also such a talented songwriter.
sad at the news - but a long life and he will be remembered for his music

I've just googled my teenage 'pash' from when I was in France - Johnny Hallyday but wished I hadn't. He must have had a facelift too far.

I first heard Charles Aznavour in the sixties and immediately wanted to hear more of this wonderful voice to add to my playlist of French singers, some listed above along with Françoise Hardy.

My favourite still remains, the late Edith Piaf who encouraged Aznavour to sing. A wonderful collaboration which still gives me pleasure since my first discovery.

Same sentiment as my DH Deedaa of course it’s just jealousy ??

Cookie, I heard part of that song on ‘Front Row’ yesterday and heard an early interview with Charles Aznavour when he spoke about the song. He wrote it in 1972 about a homosexual man ( he was heterosexual). He said he like to do brave and risky things. The climate at that time would not have been as open about homosexuality as it is now. Yes, a sad song.

I have always loved la mere, I liked Bobby Darin’s English -Beyond the sea, but the French accent wins

I heard a song by Charles Aznavour today on the radio.
It was called "What makes a Man, a Man", about a Drag Queen. It is one of the saddest songs I have ever heard. If any of you have never heard of it, then do check out both the song and indeed the lyrics online. Utterly moving.

Jane10. Gilbert Becaud. That amazing song A little love and understanding. OMG. I had forgotten it until your post.
It never ceased to amaze me just how deep his voice could go. Thank you for reminding me of this brilliant song.
Anniebach. We had 'La Mere' on a 78rpm when I was a child and it was one of my favourite songs, and remains so to this day. Beautiful.

Ah Charles Aznavour. Wonderful singer if wonderful songs. While looking through his various songs on YouTube I remembered Gilbert Becaud. I loved his 'A little love and understanding'. Sacha Distel too (sigh.)
There's something about French singers!

It was a film . This is a tribute to a singer not a film

Always find that clip from the film amusing because of the really dirty sideways looks Adelphi Celi and especially Richard Attenborough keeps giving Charles Aznavour when he’s singing, and also the fact it’s supposed to be just Aznavour playing the piano while he sings The Old Fashioned Way but you can clearly hear some percussion instruments as well. Oliver Reed gives Aznavour a big thumbs up sign so he’s clearly enjoying it.

Tony2018 Mon 01-Oct-18 22:39:17

The song is The old fashioned way.

Tony2018 Mon 01-Oct-18 22:00:56

I think this is the link to him singing the song in the film

I liked him in a 1970s Film version of Agatha Christie’s Ten little Indians. He played the piano and sang a song and then fell down dead after drinking poisoned wine.

Back in the 60s my mother was given a couple of tickets for a concert at the Albert Hall. It was some French singer that we'd never heard of, but we went anyway. The audience seemed to comprise the entire French population of London! Of course, when Charles came on and started singing we were completely blown away! DH has always called him Charles Aznovoice but I think he's just jealous.

The last record my husband bought me 1974, he died February 1975.

Thank you Charles, you have comforted me for 44 years
