I wanted to see it, until my DIL told me it was 2 and a half hours long shock - 90 mins is about my limit.

I don't understand why film-makers are so self-indulgent make such long films nowadays. I sit there and edit them in my head! grin

I haven't seen the new version, but watched the original many times.
Someone elsewhere pointed out that the song Sister Suffragettes contains a line similar to one in the news recently:
"We're clearly soldiers in petticoats
And dauntless crusaders for woman's votes
Though we adore men individually
We agree that as a group they're rather stupid!"

DD and I took DGD to see it. I was disappointed. I cannot remember any of the songs or any particular iconic moments. DD felt that Emily Blunt lacked warmth. It was okay but not the highlight I expected.

There is a lovely film which came out a while ago, relating the story of how the original Mary Poppins came about. It's called Saving Mr Banks and is really great - Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson.

There was one song in particular that stuck with me, and I’ve been humming it a lot. The one about where the lost things go. It brought a lump to my throat in the film.

I took my granddaughter who is 8 to see it a couple of days before Christmas we both loved it. The score from the original film was of course very iconic and indelibly resounds in the memory from over 50 years of exposure to it. The musical side of this film did have a big score quality about it, having said that I can't remember any of the songs and would have to hear them again. Like most Hollywood productions it presented an idealised version of London, nevertheless I thought it was clever the way the setting had been projected forward to the 1930s using the Banks' children as adults.

I was asked along to see the stage show some years ago and didn't fancy it one bit. It was superb. I don't know if I'll go to see the film though.

DCs and I enjoyed it last weekend. Don't think the music has staying power but we liked the special effects.
The leeries replace the chimney sweeps and their dancing is excellent. Loved the use of light.

I loved it too, travelsafar. And so did the DGS with us, which mattered more. One of them told us that the lady who asked the grown-up Jane for directions to number 19 in one outdoor scene was Karen Dotrice, who played the child Jane in the original film. Gave me a warm glow!

Umm my friend suggested going but I was thinking this maybe not for me I read one review that said it was louder brasher and more aggressively smiley
