Mastermind misery

Did anyne watch the risible performance of England cricketer Monty Panesar on a recent Mastermind programme?
Not only did he perform miserably in his specialist subject (Sikh religion) but his general knowledge was zero, in fact, less than a 5 yr old.
An absolute disgrace, given that he was born and bred in Luton.
Talk about being insular...
Your thoughts?

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 17:03:56

humptydumpty
I expressed my thoughts on the programme and invited others to give theirs.
Please don't tell me that no-one else states their thoughts and invites comment.
Pretty much the same as GNers penning their negative views about a family member's actions then asking us for feedback.

In retrospect I think perhaps we should all have ignored this thread. I'm leaving.

Jalima1108 Tue 15-Jan-19 16:36:52

Possibly you are right about humans judging each other GabriellaG54

However, judging someone by one disastrous appearance on a quiz show is rather like posters judging you by your posts on here.

Is that the right thing to do?

mcem Tue 15-Jan-19 16:34:45

Yes nonnie. "Thought they were superior!"
A fairly shaky premise and I've seen no evidence at all of superiority.
Delusions of adequacy perhaps?

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 15-Jan-19 16:32:25

I didn't see that particular edition but have been astonished at how badly many of these 'celebrities' have done on Mastermind. Nerves may come into it of course and that's the kindest excuse I can think of.
I was lead to believe that crib sheets are/were provided for the celebrity version - if that is the case then they make me feel like Einstein by comparison.

Nonnie Tue 15-Jan-19 16:30:16

Jabberwok yes, that's what I said twice on this thread apart from your last sentence. It does appear that this thread was started to show that someone thought they were superior, I hadn't thought of that.

Jabberwok Tue 15-Jan-19 16:23:02

Surely it was only a bit of fun as was Celebrity University Challenge both of which were watched with great enjoyment in this house. Even better we managed to answer some questions that the contestants floundered over!! People under perform for a variety of reasons, and to be so critical about something so unimportant is just plain ridiculous. On both fronts its was in aid of charity which has to be a good thing; that people didn't perform like Einstein is irrelevant, not something to be picked over and crititised by people who consider themselves academically superior.

humptydumpty Tue 15-Jan-19 15:55:46

GG I agree that everyone judges but not all start up a post to deliberately express their (negative) judgment.

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 15:27:40

The day will never dawn when humans cease to judge others.

Nonnie Tue 15-Jan-19 15:17:36

I know some celebs very well and they have a wide general knowledge despite having trained to a very high standard. I also know some people who are well educated in good jobs whose general knowledge is somewhat limited so I think it is wrong to generalise.

I agree that Mastermind is a serious competition but strongly disagree that Celebrity Mastermind is serious. JH allows a lot more frivolity in CM and the questions are easier, Same happens in University Challenge alumni competition.

Please cut them some slack. Some celebrities have more intelligence than other, some more worldly wise, just like the rest of us. Stop being judgemental

MawBroon Tue 15-Jan-19 14:50:05

Heaven forfend an actor or comedian having any intelligence?
Not actually hard
Alan Bennet, Michael Palin, Dudley Moore, Peter Cook, Jonathan Miller - anybody from the Cambridge Footlights revue gang - and we all know how incredibly easy it is to get into Cambridge don’t we.
I stick to my version. by the way - definitely at adults who should know better.
Do you wonder why?
Don’t bother to answer that.

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 14:40:05

Everyone judges others - on looks, body type, how they eat, what they say, how they dress, how much they drink, what they buy, you name it.
Don't say you have never ever judged anyone, even without putting it into words. That would be unbelievable.
Yes, I make judgements every day of my life.

Coolgran65 Tue 15-Jan-19 14:33:35

""""An England cricketer, interviewed hundreds of times, well used to stressful situations on and off the pitch. The others wiped the floor with him, even a Coronation Street actor and a comedian. """"

GabriellaG54 Oh dear... the above comment reads as though you expect a Coronation Street actor and a Comedian to know little and to perform poorly.

Over judgemental methinks.

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 14:20:13

Nah...I typed by. wink

MawBroon Tue 15-Jan-19 14:09:08

Maybe at adults who should know better? hmm

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 14:04:49

I've lived...and been in a position to meet some very nice people both known to the wider world and unknown.
The sports people to whom I referred, were medallists in their day, now retired from sport.
There are some really silly jibes being posted by adults who should know better.

merlotgran Tue 15-Jan-19 13:59:28

Just a further point: Mastermind is supposed to be a serious contest (the clue is in the name). There are plenty of light hearted quizzes like Pointless and The Chase and even they demand a modicum of general knowledge so my advice to all celebs is if you don't have a good grasp of your subject or general knowledge and are likely to freeze under pressure, don't go on a show that has a reputation for putting people literally in the spotlight.

Doing it in the name of charity just makes me cringe even more.

On the other hand, it's great to see a celeb walk to the chair that we have been led to believe doesn't have much between the ears only to discover a sharp and intelligent mind with a good chance of winning.

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 13:58:33

You never assume Jalima1108?

Jalima1108 Tue 15-Jan-19 13:57:44

Gosh, you do know a lot of famous people GG54! And personally too.

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 13:55:54

Insular

Many, but not exclusively, sportsmen/women/LGBQTF, train so extensively, compete across countries and are so wrapped up in their sport that it possibly excludes the wider accumulation of knowledge that most of us have.
I personally know two people who have no real conversation beyond their sport, and I'm talking about Olympic and European triple winning medallists. They don't know (amongst other things) recent news or UK landmarks or who their local MP is or the price of a loaf bread come to that, however, they could probably recite BA's or Ethiad's flight timetables off pat.

Jalima1108 Tue 15-Jan-19 13:46:59

I was in the audience watching an inter-schools quiz once when DD (then 9) was in the team. I saw her face freeze when she was asked a question and couldn't answer.
She said afterwards that she knew the answer but it just wouldn't come to mind! She was mortified.
Thank goodness it wasn't televised.

Anniebach Tue 15-Jan-19 13:40:36

My thoughts ? If the man is being slated across the media what sort of person would want to continue the slating.

Jalima1108 Tue 15-Jan-19 13:37:27

I said nothing about names.

not everyone on here has heard of him and, given his name, might assume he had lived most of his life in another country with little knowledge of the UK.

No, that was you assuming what other people may assume, GG54.

GabriellaG54 Tue 15-Jan-19 13:35:40

???

Anja Tue 15-Jan-19 13:30:56

Not very original GG ?

What it says is I don’t like what you post. You are entitled to post what you like, that is free speech and one must accept it takes all sorts. Likewise I’m allowed to express my own opinion or doesn’t that suit you?
