Regardless of background and party, is anyone else impressed by the common sense and thoughtful approach of Rory Stewart?
I'm prepared for this to be an unpopular view.

Elrel
I'm with you. I first came across him a few years ago when he was on woman's hour. He was telling us how when he was working in Iraq (for this government) he took himself off to walk through Afghanistan alone, fascinating. I've 'followed' followed him ever since. A very reasoned man.

I'm impressed with him too!

Urmstongran Sat 02-Feb-19 22:20:49

Me too ??

And another fan here!

DH and I were chatting the other day and said we wish he was our MP instead of Dominic Grieve who has let us down badly.

I looked Rory up on Wiki and found he was a diplomat and I am not surprised.

What a lovely young man.

He’s a Tory who supports austerity wholeheartedly so no I’m not impressed by him btw

Yes, I listened to him yesterday and was impressed by his calm common sense and practical ideas.

Why do you always try so hard to be confrontational, Maryeliza?

Marilla Sun 03-Feb-19 09:11:12

I am not a Tory voter, but I always enjoy listening to Rory Stewart. He is so articulate, but not in a pompous manner.
I find myself agreeing with what he says on many matters, especially Brexit.

I heard him on Any Questions yesterday and enjoyed listening to him. Thoughtful, intelligent, well informed and considered responses.
Yes, he's a Conservative and I'm not but, what a relief to hear a politician who clearly cares about his work.
In these dreadful times, we seem to have so few politicians we believe will do their best for the country, whatever colour their politics, that's what we need.

I can’t say I’ve ever noticed him particularly, but I’ve just googled him out of curiosity and he’s certainly had an interesting life. One to watch, no doubt.

Hopefully Party Leader material. Articulate, thoughtful and, dare one say, caring. Fingers crossed that it's genuine!

Nonnie Sun 03-Feb-19 13:19:13

Slightly off thread but did anyone else think they were rather nicer to each other this week? I thought they didn't have advance notice of the questions but when the last was asked I thought they probably had.

Jalima1108 Sun 03-Feb-19 13:40:20

I don't know anything about his voting record but when I have seen him on tv he seems very calm, reasoned and sensible.

Elrel Sun 03-Feb-19 14:15:30

Nonnie - I thought the whole programme was much more pleasant. I always find it better than Question Time for common sense and calm.

Nonnie Sun 03-Feb-19 16:38:54

Elrel do you think it was because they knew what the last question was going to be? Sometimes, maybe usually, it is far more confrontational. It would make sense that they knew the questions in advance but Mr D always says they don't. I think it helps that we can't see them!

maryeliza54 Sun 03-Feb-19 16:47:32

What’s confrontational about criticising someone who backs austerity and the dreadful suffering it has led to? Being good on TV doesn’t make up for any of that

lemongrove Sun 03-Feb-19 16:55:39

I think the OP was hoping to avoid your kind of posts on the matter MaryE

I agree with others that Rory Stewart is interesting to hear.

maryeliza54 Sun 03-Feb-19 16:57:23

Well that didn’t happen did it?

maryeliza54 Sun 03-Feb-19 16:59:39

And anyway she said she was prepared for this to be an unpopular view so what’s your beef?

Elrel Sun 03-Feb-19 18:07:21

maryeliza - He wasn't on the tv, keep up!

Elrel Sun 03-Feb-19 18:08:33

Nonnie - yes, I reckon they did have a hint of the last question.
