Jeremy Kyle: MP calls for ITV show to be axed for good https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-48265740
disclaimer <I have never watched the Jeremy Kyle show>

Following the suicide of a participant, there have been calls for the show to be axed on the grounds that it exploits vulnerable people.

But don’t a lot of programmes do that?

What about the harrowing interviews of people whose lives have been ripped apart by tragedy, crime or natural disaster?

If the Jeremy Kyle show is axed, shouldn’t the broadcast media take a long hard look at themselves in the way they report other things?

When I first retired and was revelling in the luxury of watching daytime tv I did watch this vile show. I was appalled at the behaviour of the participants, the audience and Kyle himself. After the novelty of the first few programmes I was so sickened I've never seen it since.
Today I've read how the participants are coached in what to say and how to behave, even acting out completely scripted and totally untrue stories just to feed this sick show. They do it for the small fee, the night in a hotel, the travel expenses but most of all for their five minutes of fame in this "celebrity" obsessed society,
Yes, take it off, along with other degrading shows and probably all the violent foul mouthed soaps too.
We might then hope for programmes that set a better example.

Don't know why it took someone dying to recognise the harm it caused.

Annaram1 Wed 15-May-19 15:36:17

Good, so it is gone now. There are probably a lot of ex-contestants who JK was nasty too, and they will probably sue the company saying that their feeings were hurt and they have suffered since.
Why is it only on the JK show that drug addicts are given free places anyway?

Harris27 Wed 15-May-19 15:33:04

Have seen bits if it while telly was on its vile and all that's wrong with today's society sitting watching people ridiculed and humiliated just for entertainment disgusting! Glad it's gone!

Hildagard Wed 15-May-19 15:20:54

Thank goodness it’s been axed, bear baiting! Let’s hope Eastenders gets axed too, hate that programme, everyone shouting at each other, yuk?

Pat1949.
His living from despair of the rejected and the deceived.

I don’t think the show should necessarily have been cancelled although the decision has now been made. I wasn’t a fan, but I thought the aftercare was pretty good, and watched sometimes when drug addicts were given free rehab places. I thought it was good that people who had nowhere else to turn were helped. I know there was a lot of entertainment value that could have been seen as exploitative but even BGT has an element of that. I wonder how many people were actually helped by the show? It’s a shame that they are throwing out the baby with the bath water.

SirChenjin Wed 15-May-19 13:57:43

Yes it should go - but it will be replaced by something equally as hideous, so normalised has this type of entertainment become and so desensitised have we (the societal we) become to this sort of Victorian freak show TV.

It's all about the money, viewing figures and media exposure - kindness is not what we measure success by sadly.

Riggie Wed 15-May-19 13:53:36

Ive seen odd bits of the show - my adult SN child sometimes puts it on and us told to turn it off!! (Luckily I don't think they understand it).

Dreadful programme. But I guess he will be back with something equally as vile....

sarahellenwhitney Wed 15-May-19 13:33:36

JK appears to thrive on the vulnerable and recall another of his TV programmes where he was allowed, by both patients and the medical profession, access by TV cameras to film many personal health issues. The personal questions he asked of patients were not, in my opinion, for the public,
This latest incident says to me that JK should not be let loose with these kind of programmes.
What qualifications does he possess, where the mind and body is concerned, but comes more into what appears to be his own morbid curiosity.

Pat1949 Wed 15-May-19 13:31:25

Yes it should be axed. I've never watched a full programme, just seen bits occasionally. Jeremy Kyle has made a living out of exploiting vulnerable people. A lot of the people on there are mentally ill and the audience and those who watch it........,well the less said about them the better. Bearing baiting it is.

Labaik Wed 15-May-19 13:15:50

Should never have aired in the first place. Don't understand how anyone can either want to be on it or watch it...sad..

Craftycat Wed 15-May-19 13:14:06

I'd never seen this programme until they started showing clips following this tragic event.
It seems to me to be the very worst of American styled programmes. I can't imagine anyone wanting to watch it let alone actually go on to it.
I am amazed it was even allowed to be on British TV.
Quite horrible & just seems to be a way to humiliate vulnerable & rather sad people.
What are we coming to if this is considered entertainment- we'll have bear baiting on TV next!!

humptydumpty Wed 15-May-19 12:35:20

IMO the really bad thing about this show is that the results of lie-detector tests are taken as 100% reliable (even though there is a small note at the bottom of the screen to the effect that it's not), and certainly JK treats the results like that on the show, damning categorically anyone who fails the test (I believe this is what happened to this poor man)

missdeke Wed 15-May-19 12:29:57

Absolutely, it's time to get this awful programme off the tv, I can't stand the man at all, he is so full of himself I can't bear to watch anything with him in, even trailers for his shows.

Oldwoman70 Wed 15-May-19 12:21:20

I dislike all the so called "reality" programmes, however, the Jeremy Kyle show was, as a magistrate said, just cruel bear baiting

DanniRae Wed 15-May-19 12:15:08

I can't believe that a couple of posters are suggesting "I'm a Celebrity........" should be axed, grouping it together with the Jeremy Kyle show.
Have they ever seen it? It's nothing like the Jeremy Kyle show. I really enjoy it because it's good fun and lovely to see all the celebrities bonding during their time in the jungle. Maybe a case of 'here's a band wagon, let's jump on it' I suspect!

fizzers Wed 15-May-19 12:04:23

well I used to watch it every now and again, but not for a long time. I found the man intimidating, a bully , exploitative of somewhat vulnerable people - all in the name of entertainment. The so called lie detector is notoriously unreliable, hence not admissable in a court of law, yet on this programme 0if a person fails this test , then they are a 100% liar according to Jeremy Kyle.... It was only a matter of time before something like this happened.
Remember Jenny Jones talk show from the 90's? she outted a man on her show and he later killed himself...

blue60 Wed 15-May-19 11:44:27

I have watched the programme in the past and was horrified for the participants. I did not watch it for very long, as I felt uneasy about the format, the way the participants were manipulated and the hostile audience.

Yes, the show should be axed and I really can't understand why broadcasting standards have allowed this sort of 'entertainment' to be aired in the first place.

I hope we will see the end of this genre, where people's misfortunes are to be broadcast for all to see and stop the vulgar profits made from misery.

Annaram1 Wed 15-May-19 11:27:37

I have seen this a few times. Not sure why. Jeremy Kyle was told off a few years ago for being rude to contestants and he is now worse than he was. When they show the results of the lie-detector test a line appears on the screen that says the results are not 100% accurate. The poor man involved may have been in the small category of those for whom it was not accurate. Jeremy Kyle should never appear on TV again.

NannyG123 Wed 15-May-19 11:14:01

Although this isn't going to be a popular post, I think the show also does good, I've seen the show bring people together, get people into rehab. Yes most of it is people shouting at each other, but they are the people that ring the show and agree to go on it. After 14 years on air they know what the shows like, and some just want 15mins of fame. I like JK,

Hm999 Wed 15-May-19 11:09:37

DD was telling me that Love Island has had 2 suspected suicides. So will that go too?

Sheilasue Wed 15-May-19 11:01:21

It has been. Thank goodness, awful programme television at its worst.

JanaNana Wed 15-May-19 10:59:25

I remember seeing this programme a few times when I was still working, some of the people I had to visit would be glued to it while I was trying to talk to them over the sound of it as they might miss something if they switched it off! It just seemed a very cruel type of programme with JK bullying in a provocative manner, to get the desired reaction. How it ever lasted this long is unbelievable.

grannytotwins Wed 15-May-19 10:49:49

I watched it once, recently. A friend was on there and her segment was lovely. It was to do with her adoption and birth family. It made me cry as it was so touching, but I watched the earlier segments and they were appalling. I’m glad it’s been axed.
