Jeremy Kyle: MP calls for ITV show to be axed for good https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-48265740
disclaimer <I have never watched the Jeremy Kyle show>

Following the suicide of a participant, there have been calls for the show to be axed on the grounds that it exploits vulnerable people.

But don’t a lot of programmes do that?

What about the harrowing interviews of people whose lives have been ripped apart by tragedy, crime or natural disaster?

If the Jeremy Kyle show is axed, shouldn’t the broadcast media take a long hard look at themselves in the way they report other things?

What I've always loathed about this sort of thing is that it normalises some pretty dire behaviour by putting it into mainstream media. Screaming and shouting at each other will never solve anything and living your life without out much of a moral compass is also not to be encouraged.
For the same reason I loathe all those pay day loan adds that imply not being able to get to the end of the month without borrowing at 1000% is also perfectly normal...its not!
Its not poverty in the real sense of the word in many of these cases - its just not organising your life that's the problem. I was a single Mum once - OH just walked out and left me with mortgage to pay, no job and a newborn. Heck I lived of porridge for at least 6 months. Plan your life a bit, make provisions, have a few rules about being a decent person. This darn programme just gave folks the impression you could be nasty and it was OK....its not.

Am happy it is disappearing as I didn't like the confrontational format at all. However, I'm not sure about the reasoning for its demise and where all the blame seems to be directed.

Why do they go in it? 15 minutes of fame I imagine. That’s how they live, the ones who yell and scream and apparently sleep around and steal from their grandmothers.

I actually know a very young couple who went on the show, both of them damaged by their upbringing. They said they went for a day out with a hotel room with minibar the night before, the only time they had ever stayed in a hotel, and for the fun of being on TV.

The story (contrived) was that the boyfriend had doubts that their baby, her second child, was his. I was worried for her in case her messed up life was going to be further messed up and searched YouTube for the programme. To my surprise, given JK’s notoriety, he didn’t set them up for a big confrontation, got the boyfriend to admit to a skunk habit and suggested it was making him paranoid, read out the DNA results, wished them well and sent them on their way.

I guess Kyle on his programmes exploited what was already there and presented with a couple of reasonable young people found no bad behaviour to encourage.

I don’t watch the programme, though I saw some of it in it’s early days and I am glad it has been taken off.

My young couple broke up not long after.

It should have been axed years ago. It has taken this tragedy to get it done....so sad

Oldwoman70 Wed 15-May-19 10:32:47

It is being reported that the programme had people who would trawl the internet (Facebook, etc.) looking for people who posted about their problems, they would then become a "friend" and suggest they go on the programme.

Someone who worked on the programme is reported as saying they would spend a long time tearing someone apart and just 10 minutes trying to put them back together.

Having watched Jeremy Kyle shouting at someone his face distorted confirmed my belief that he is a bully. He wasn't interested in "helping" anyone he just wanted to take advantage of people in order to cater to the audiences basest instincts and make himself very rich.

jangeo44 Wed 15-May-19 10:32:05

Probably sound unsympathetic - but these people know what the show entails so why in earth would you want to put yourself through all that humiliation to air your dirty linen in public. Is it just to be on T.V?

Miep1 Wed 15-May-19 10:28:58

I am not worried whether this show goes or not - the people on it know full well what they are letting themselves in for and the audience are no different from the million or so people who sit baying at home! If they axe this for good however, I think others such as Love Island, I'm a Celebrity, Big Brother and all the rest should be axed as well...I'm sure that I have read of suicides/marriage break-ups etc allied to these. I wonder how many people watch those? Incidentally, the people in the audience of JK show could be interchanged with the participants!

Rosina Wed 15-May-19 10:27:33

I do agree Christingle - there is far too much of a 'no shame no blame' culture now when people do outrageous things and then seem to feel they can gloss over whatever has happened and carry on - like the MP lying about speeding; she was initially saying that she was a victim - 'like Jesus'!! - and seemingly would have had the brass neck to continue, regardless, if she thought her constituents would allow it. However the people who appeared on the JK show, and many of those on other reality shows, are clearly picked for their emotional and mental fragility in the hope that they will not need much provocation to explode and provide 'interesting' TV. I read yesterday that JK participants are given alcohol beforehand and offered and suitably 'chavvy ' clothes in order to suit a certain profile. What a relief that it is cancelled.

kazziecookie Wed 15-May-19 10:22:42

I have only watched it a couple of times out of curiosity. I cannot stand any programmes where people are shouting and falling out with each other. I think it is right that it is now being axed.
I think they need to look into how some of these reality shows effect the people who appear on them. They have had other things happening like the Love Island contestant taking his life.
My daughters friend was on Come Dine With Me and he said it was edited in a way as to show him in a bad light and he hadn’t said things in the way they were showing it.
I have a guest house and are regularly asked to go on Four In A Bed. No chance!

Nanniejc1 Wed 15-May-19 10:21:57

I don’t watch any of the reality tv programmes ,they are all rubbish but think if Jeremy Kyle is being axed so should ‘Love Island’ & all the other shows that are like this, there have been two suicides connected to that program. These people relish being in the limelight but I really can’t see why anyone would want to ‘air their dirty washing ‘ on live tv in front of millions of people.

Anniebach Wed 15-May-19 10:21:30

The programme has been axed

Christingle Wed 15-May-19 10:18:21

Loath this show, will be glad it goes. However, the public who appear on it have to take responsibility for what they are doing, no one breaks their arms to go on the show. I’m sick of this continual blame culture when it’s always someone else’s responsibility and not their own.

cc Wed 15-May-19 10:15:14

Yes.
Its a truly horrible show that (in many cases) exploits less advantaged people who want to be on TV.
I should add that I've seen it when my daughter had a badly broken leg and was watching daytime TV.

Nanny27 Wed 15-May-19 10:11:32

Thank goodness they've taken this vile programme of TV. I find it hard to feel much sympathy for the participants who will do anything, including risking their relationship, reputation or family to get their faces on tv. As for the audience who enjoy the spectacle either in the studio or at home, well, words fail me. I do of course feel so sad that a man took his life because of it.

Eloethan Wed 15-May-19 10:09:48

Good.

dragonfly46 Wed 15-May-19 10:08:40

Hooray that the evil programme has been axed. Why should the tv companies make money out of other people's misfortune!

GrannyMosh Wed 15-May-19 10:08:04

It has been cancelled permanently according to a newsflash on the internet. Not before time! Pity it took a death to force someone's hand.

nannypiano Wed 15-May-19 10:05:57

I think it's common knowledge that the lie detector is probably wrong as often as it's right, otherwise courts would surely use it. JK seems to swear by it though, which is wrong. No one gets the benefit of the doubt as far as he's concerned, which is so wrong and unjust. Imagine telling the truth and when your whole life and future could depend on the outcome, you are accused of guilt and have no way of justifying yourself. No wonder that poor guy felt bad enough to end his life. Do I think the show should be banned for good? Yes I certainly do.

Urmstongran Wed 15-May-19 10:04:55

It’s been axed. Permanently!
Good.
The end of the JK Show.
?

jaybee66 Wed 15-May-19 10:04:46

Does anyone know if the people on the show get paid for appearing on it? I have always wondered why they go on it when they know what is going to happen.

Shazmo24 Wed 15-May-19 10:02:26

Breaking News: Its been axed!
The only thing other than for Stewart Dymonds family & friends is that all those people involved with the programme will now be jobless
Also, will programmes like I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here should be axed???

Pudding123 Wed 15-May-19 10:01:43

Yes it should go,it is vile as is its presenter

GabriellaG54 Wed 15-May-19 10:01:06

Dross for the dim and dysfunctional.

jaylucy Wed 15-May-19 10:00:31

It should have been cancelled years ago. The constant naming and shaming that is on there really sickens me the few times I have seen it.
You never see what happens after all the shouting has died down, if the counselling supposedly offered actually produces a positive result!

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 15-May-19 09:56:29

I've only ever seen snippets of JK and believe me, it was enough. It's been likened to a 'bear pit' which tells us all we need to know.
I don't know why vulnerable people go on as they are exploited for so-called entertainment. It can't possibly be a good thing to bare all on national television in such a way. The only thing that a journalist is interested in is the story - doesn't matter who or what as long as they get the story. Many have admitted that they'd betray a friend for the story. It's a sad sign of our modern times.
