Judi Dench in Borneo

According to the Radio Times Judi is losing her sight and can no longer read. Unless it has got worse since the filming, I wonder how she was able to see all the creatures.

I felt Judi was doing rather a lot of acting. All the short gasps of wonder sounded a bit stagey.

Very interesting though.

I am fed up with celebrities having these experiences, most of them earn enough to fund themselves. It's the same small pool of favourites and I won't watch them any more. Judy has been a good acrors and had a good life. Let a young person, start starting have a chance.

If having a 'celeb' drawing attention to what we are doing to the world around us then sobeit. On the other hand I saw a bit of a programme of 'celebs with trawlermen' last night;apart from Anthony Worral watsit I didn't know who the other were and they just swore a lot...

Yes, I also find Judi Dench’s voice irritating, sounds like she needs to clear her throat. I watched that programme a while back There is Nothing Like A Dame, and although she, Maggie Smith, Eileen Atkins and Joan Plowright seemed very matey, there was a “jokey” undercurrent about Judi bagging all the best roles! At least I think they were jokey!

I too love JD, and will certainly catch up this programme.
Forgive me for being perhaps a bit cynical, but I think that maybe celebs can afford to have help with the mundane daily domestic tasks that we, as we get older, find more and more tedious, time consuming, and physically exhausting ! leaving them with time and energy to pursue other activities.

Judy Dench was really good in this programme. I'm sure I read somewhere that she has previously adopted three orangutans and wants to see them in the wild.

I think both Judi Dench and Borneo are absolutely wonderful...
But I just could not watch yet another celebrity doing something as marvellous as this. I would like it if they would take an ordinary person who has never had the chance to travel and show them beautiful parts of the world which otherwise they will never see.
I know celebrities attract an audience..... but still......

It was a great program and am looking forward to the next episode. I was more interested in the animals and the flora than who was presenting but I do love Judi Dench and will watch anything she is in she is usually brilliant. I understand previous comments about celebs going travelling and getting paid for doing so.But if this had been entitled The Borneo Adventure do you think it would have attracted as many viewers as the current title does. Judi was the draw for me i have to say otherwise i may have missed a beautiful nature program.

Littleannie yes, my god daughter was in a film alongside her and she said the mood in the rehearsal room lightened when JD came in and put everyone at ease.

I bumped into Judi in a gift shop in Cornwall last year. She stood chatting and was absolutely charming. I enjoy any programme she is in.

I may be the only person in the world who finds Judi Dench irritating. It’s mainly the little-girly voice, I think. Give me Maggie Smith any day.

I'll add Martin Clunes to Maw's list of celebs who 'take us there'. Joanna Lumley can be excused though because I just spend the whole hour admiring her outfits.

I admire Judi Dench and I love the opportunity to see another part of the world, but like CalendarGirl question this whole notion of actors or other “celebrities” being credited with “taking us there”.
The camera crew are the principal people who should take the credit for what we see, the presenter is just that.
An actor is just a person doing their job albeit in an articulate and attractive way. Your plumber, my gardener, any botanist, biologist ,or scientist is just as entitled to have their views . And perhaps command a lesser fee than a “celebrity”. Just because Judi Dench or Sue Perkins or Rick Stein is a famous face - so what?

Love Judy Dench. In fact love so many actors of her generation. They are national treasures indeed.

Judy Dench is creating a little arboretum I think at her home, she has a huge love of trees.

The woman puts me to shame ! I enjoyed the programme but honestly don't know how she does it. I'm jaded just doing a bit of shopping . Makes me feel a bit depressed when I see the older celebs such as Judy doing her globe-trotting and wandering through the forest among all those insects. Well done herself. Not only a good actress but a budding Attenborough too.

I agree that too many so called celebrities jump on this bandwagon, but this programme was different. Judi is an intelligent, thinking lady who has always had a passion for orangutans. Her partner is a farmer and conservationist and the programme was taken from a scientific angle. Her sheer delight in nature at 84 was humbling.

Ellianne I watched and was totally enthralled. The cinematography was excellent, it was the insects that I found fascinating as well as the forest. Borneo is on our “bucket list”.

Totally agree with you Calendargirl . Getting a bit fed up with it to be honest.

I only saw a part of it, but thought the same. I thought she may be in her 70's, but she's 84!
