Goodbye Mr Chips

I have a theory that it's better to watch the movie, series or drama first, and then read the book. The book is always better and more detailed so if you read it first then you have already formed a visual representation in your head. The movie can be a disappointment, sometimes hugely so.
If you watch the movie first then you can have the delight of reading more details in the book!
Not everyone will agree of course.

I've seen the Martin Clunes version and it was excellent.

We watched this the other afternoon. It was very sweet between-Xmas-&-New Year viewing.

Spoiler! The scene where he loses Kathie had me sniffling away.

I too always end up in tears when watching this film it is delightful.

I thought the original with Robert Donat was much, much better. I wasn't convinced by Martin Clunes and, from my recollection, the ending was much too "Hollywood", whereas the Donat version made me cry.

I liked both the Robert Donat/Gree Garson and the Petula Clarke/Peter O'Tool versions.

Unfortunately I can't access this one but as Mr Clunes is such a wonderful actor, I'm sure it's briliant.

I watch it every time it's on, I think it's lovely and it always makes me cry .

I was reluctant to watch as I loved the original film however it was really enjoyable.

W H Balgarnie was the master it was based upon,he taught at The Leys in Cambridge.
It was the Alma mater of my husband and FIL.

James Hilton attended the Leys during WW1, he wrote the book age 20.
His other famous work is Random Harvest.

Yes, I watched it and really enjoyed it.

I saw the Martin Clunes version when it was first released and thought it was absolutely dreadful; he is an excellent actor but was completely miscast, and the film lost all the subtlety of the book. I much prefer the original black and white version, but the book is best of all.

I didn’t watch it over the holidays but have seen it several times, loved it.
