Couldn’t help feeling a bit sorry for Caroline with her error of judgement!

SueDonim Sun 01-Mar-20 22:28:24

It didn’t do much for me this evening, although Ted could liven things up. Too many storylines, I think, and it ended up bitty.

I think the wee girl is called Emily.

Callistemon Sun 01-Mar-20 22:08:09

I don't think her real name is Calamity, I think she is Emily.

My DM called me Calamity (for obvious reasons).

Calendargirl Sun 01-Mar-20 22:07:19

I think Calamity is just a nickname, didn’t they introduce her to Ted or someone else tonight as Emma/Emily?

lemongrove Sun 01-Mar-20 21:39:05

The cheeky girl was Calamity. Gillian’s son is now a teacher, ( if I have this right) married to a pretty but dim girl who gave the baby the ridiculous name.
Why did the director give Calamity not only a real ‘mouth’ but also a broader accent than her parents?I think it was so that it underlined the difference between her and Caroline’s child, as another poster has already said.
Alan is starting to grate on me now tbh with his never having his own view and being so hen pecked.

It's not floating my boat unfortunately. Loved the previous ones. It feels a bit wrung out.

I suspect Sally Wainwright didn't think she was writing a "cute" little girl, more one who reflects many little girls in that valley
full of character and over exposed to adult talk, so a bit precocious

Oopsadaisy3 Wed 26-Feb-20 19:09:36

I didn’t actually watch the first 10 mins so I don’t know what the childs father does, I’ll find out next week! Or maybe I’ll google it.

Callistemon Wed 26-Feb-20 19:06:07

Yes, you're right, I didn't actually think about that
Although actually, the father of the rude child is a teacher too, isn't he?

Whoever wrote it may have thought it was cute but it wasn't.

Oopsadaisy3 Wed 26-Feb-20 19:01:03

Callistemon I thought that it was heavy handed, the farming, poorer family have a cheeky/ rude child and the head teacher has a well behaved one.

Hmmmm.

Callistemon Wed 26-Feb-20 17:36:44

I thought the little girl was very rude when they were travelling in the car, rather than charmingly cheeky.
Brat.

I have just watched this on catch up. It may just me, but I found it boring. I have loved the other series so far. So sad that she has turned out such an old grouch. I suppose that it may get going but I won't be in a rush to catch up in future.?

Just seen this, soon remembered all the different characters and their back stories. So enjoyable to watch. Brightened up my day,.

I enjoyed it too. Interesting to see the characters a few years older and the two little girls are delightful and such talented actors.

Well said washerwoman, Sally Wainwright is a genius.
Celia is exactly as she was portrayed at the beginning of the series, a rather shallow, snobbish, self centred, selfish woman. I laughed again when Alan says " she reads the Daily Mail" as a means of describing the difference between them. Celia is equally dismissive of Guardian readers.
The moorland, countryside and housing in the area of filming is close to the hearts of us northern women, as is Sally Wainwright's ability to write dialogue we understand.

Calendargirl - I'm not sure Alan will work in the supermarket, though I think he'd be excellent there. Our BandQ is run by men like Alan. I wonder if he's going to find himself either as a volunteer with an organisation helping lads like the one arrested for stealing "a square meal", or if he'll end up bringing said lad home to live in the bungalow......
I love the children by the way. Very entertaining. I find all the characters likeable and believable in their own way, including Celia

Calendargirl Wed 26-Feb-20 07:13:25

Caught up on new episode last night. I enjoyed it, and could remember what was going on, more or less.
I think some of you are a bit hard on Celia. Yes, she is quite forthright in her views, but you know where you are with her. She has been like that from the start, so Alan should have realised what he was taking on. I find his sitting on the fence, not wanting to upset anyone, rather irritating.
Think he won’t last long in the supermarket if he gets the job.

I decided to catch up with the earlier episodes before it started again, as the ones I'd watched previously had not really made sense to me not knowing the back story
IIRC Alan had a house that he had been renting out, as well as his own house, Celia's money I think went towards affording the Harrogate house, a house like that in Harrogate would be very dear, I got the impression that she'd been left comfortably off
Houses like the bungalow are not as dear in Calderdale as many other places, and could Caroline have inherited from Kate [who presumably also had property in the Harrogate area] when she was widowed to help fund the new house and the restoration, as well as her share in the Harrogate house
I have enjoyed place spotting too, especially in the earlier episodes

Thanks Oopsadaisy3 ??

SueDonim Tue 25-Feb-20 22:11:54

Hahaha, Bluebell! grin You can tell I’m not a Corrie-watcher. blush

Gemini17892 Tue 25-Feb-20 20:22:49

Yes I agree. Too much going on. Didn’t like the children’s parts . Couldn’t see much in the dark farmhouse.
Many good series seem to run out of steam after a couple of runs.

Dottydots Tue 25-Feb-20 18:38:02

I felt there was too much going on and too many people appearing that I had to keep stopping the recording and run it back to try to remember who everyone was. I got there in the end, though. It helped even more when I put on the sub-titles.
I'm looking forward to the next episode.

BlueBelle Tue 25-Feb-20 18:24:37

I think Deidre would have had a huge shock too suedonim as it was Valerie Barlow not Deidre who was killed ???

Oopsadaisy3 Tue 25-Feb-20 18:15:25

Ginster click on Forums, then select the category and it will say ‘ start a new discussion, on my iPad it’s yellow so easy to see.

Gingster Tue 25-Feb-20 18:07:41

Sorry but how do I start a new discussion?

SueDonim Tue 25-Feb-20 17:10:29

I’m grin at it being a ‘huge shock’ when Deirdre Barlow was electrocuted, Calendargirl! I do recall that, actually.

Gillian annoys me with her...speech...affectation...of.of...hesitation...which she...she also does...in...other...roles. It’s.....irritating.
