All the Joan Hickson Miss Marple programmes....

The first one did seem very long!
In future I shall record and zoom through the ads.

My favourite is Sleeping Murder - so creepy!
I’ve always really liked the music and graphics at the beginning - very cleverly done IMO. An idyllic looking village - until the camera zooms in to some malevolent looking faces.

I nodded off and had to watch the last hour again today! Luckily I knew ‘whodunnit’.

Next week ‘The Moving Finger’, and only 2 hours fortunately.

Bed at 10.

I watched " The body in the library " last night---nearly 3 hours.

I read somewhere that Joan Hickson was Agatha's personal choice for the role of Miss Marple, but Joan was just too young for the part at the time.

I agree with the consensus that Joan Higson was the best Miss Marple.

Found it. Sky channel 143 at 8pm. Joan Hickson is the real Miss Marple.

Can anyone tell me what the Margaret Rutherford film was where she was on a coach in the fog? I thought it was a Miss Marple but have now found out I'm wrong.

Was it ‘The Runaway Bus’?

If so, it had Frankie Howard in it also.

Joan Hickson was spot on as Miss Marple and they didn't change the stories too much when she was doing it.

Thanks for the heads up - I shall tune in if it doesn't clash with anything. I think Joan Hickson was the best Miss Marple.

I'm currently listening to Miss Marple on BBC Sounds iplayer. June Whitfield made a passable Miss Marple,; gentle, inquisitive and hesitant.

@Grandmabatty, you’ve reminded me of the old B&W ‘The 4.50 From Paddington’ with Margaret R. There used to be a still from it on the cover of the old paperback. I now have a yen to see it again!

I often used to think that AC must have got the idea after being on a train at night (in the days of closed compartments),seeing another train pass very close by, all lit up, and thinking, ‘What if...?’

I also always loved Margaret R as the medium in Blithe Spirit.
A young American niece absolutely adored that film - had to watch it (an old VHS copy) every time she visited.
I now have a yen to watch that again, too!

Margaret Rutherford was ok but far too stout and bossy! Joan Hickson was quietly meticulous and a much better depiction of the character!

AFAIK, Agatha Christie herself wanted Joan Hickson for the part.

Geraldine McEwan was the worst, that accent and her twittery mannerisms!

I have been reading all the Miss Marple books, she was described as being ‘tall and thin’. Neither Geraldine nor Julia M fitted that description.

I always wonder why directors don’t try harder to match the actors to their book descriptions.

I saw that too! I love Joan Hickson's interpretation of Miss Marple. It seems the truest to the books. Margaret Rutherford was a tour de force but I never took to Julia mackenzie at all.

Although Margaret Rutherford was good too.
