Brilliant mini series on Netflix.

Briefly, an orphan is taught how to play Chess by her Childrens Home Caretaker, set in the 1950s. Very atmospheric.

I don’t play chess, but I was absorbed.

Haven't got Netflix, But, when my parents took me to Belgium in the early 1950's, we had duvets / continental quilts then.
A real novelty, but I also loved the huge square pillows.

I started to watch this last night and I think I’m going to enjoy it.

My father gave me my first duvet from Holland in 1971.

I loved it too, fascinating to see a little of that world. Loved the way her sense of style developed over time. I must read the book now.

I saw Tony Blackburn raving about it, and had a look.

Thanks suziewoozie It looks like something I would enjoy. Although I find anything about children in care unsettling to say the least.
No doubt I will sit with my fists balled up tightly through that part!

That sounds encouraging Baggs I need transporting out of my reality for a bit right now!

Baggs Fri 06-Nov-20 17:08:20

My friend's parents called duvets "downies" and so I also did for many years but duvet seemed to take over.

Baggs Fri 06-Nov-20 17:04:36

I think 7 is the end. It felt like more than seven episodes to me because I found it so exciting that I had to keep having breaks! Need to read the book now.

Baggs Fri 06-Nov-20 17:00:24

I first used a duvet at a friend's parents' house in 1975. They had brought it from Norway where they holidayed quite often.

I wonder if limited means only one series ? It’s certainly all there

Namsnanny Fri 06-Nov-20 16:24:54

How many episodes or series of this are there?

I have access to 7 episodes of series 1 on Netflix, but it is saying it's a limited series. So I dont want to get into it if the end is missing or something like that!

In Austria in 1964, I slept under something very like a modern-day duvet - a large cotton bag, full of feathers or down, not divided into squares like mine is now,

Sparklefizz Fri 06-Nov-20 16:16:41

When duvets first became popular in the UK, we called them "continental quilts". I remember getting our first one in about 1973 from Habitat.

Baggs Fri 06-Nov-20 16:12:26

PS Britain is European.

Baggs Fri 06-Nov-20 16:10:49

Even we had eiderdowns: down from eider ducks. Eider ducks live on our loch.

Baggs Fri 06-Nov-20 16:08:02

I know the Scandinavians had them. I guess Russia had plenty of goose down too.

Jane10 Fri 06-Nov-20 15:57:57

I thought duvets were European

suziewoozie Fri 06-Nov-20 15:40:50

Baggs

Did they have duvets in Russia in 1968?

I’ve no idea but they had them in Europe

Granmarie without giving anything away , I’m not sure how they can do a series 2 , but , fingers crossed.

I've watched 2 episodes and I'm loving it so far. I restrict myself to an episode a night, so I can enjoy it for longer! The acting is superb, particularly the young actor playing the lead. I know next to nothing about chess, but that doesn't matter a jot!

Vickysponge Tue 03-Nov-20 09:18:38

This sounds great. Will starting watching later. Thanks!

Jane10 Tue 03-Nov-20 09:17:47

I'm trying to watch it slowly so it won't be over too soon.

Grannmarie Tue 03-Nov-20 09:16:39

I've just binge watched Season One, thoroughly enjoyed it. I know nothing about chess but the acting was excellent. I loved the attention to detail on sixties' fashion, decor, cars and current affairs, a bit like Madmen.

I wonder if there will be a Season Two?

suziewoozie Tue 03-Nov-20 08:40:32

I watched the first episode last night and loved it. Brilliant young actress.

pensionpat Tue 03-Nov-20 07:59:13

Really enjoyed this and I agree it didn’t matter that I knew nothing about chess.
