Great Canal Journeys with Sheila Hancock and Gyles Brandreth

I have just watched tonight's programme, and during their journey, Sheila and Gyles visited the site of a derelict Gun Powder Mill.

This brought back memories of the times mum took me and my brother to Powder Mill Lane, in Whitton, Twickenham.

I sort of recall a wooded place with a stream running through it.
Funny how things stir the old brain cells.

Does anyone else remember the place?

I loved the Tim and Prue ones. They are very endearing. I did enjoy this one though.

Puzzler62 was on channel 4 yesterday at 8pm, watched in England. I enjoyed as I did three or four narrow boat holidays some few years ago, not a lot of H&S went on!

I think I’d rather see Gareth Edwards on the canals than Giles Brandreth - was it available only in Wales Pantglas ? I’d not heard of it although I watched the Tim and Prue ones.

It was a very entertaining programme, never seen the ones with Timothy West and Prunella Scales and now wish I had.
I just hope I am as fit at 87 as Sheila Hancock is. She is amazing.

One of my friends had us in fits of laughter telling us about her parents who were in their late 60s and took their first boat trip on the Norfolk Broads. Her dad managed to reverse the boat into someone’s fence, as he moved forward he dragged the whole fence down. The owner came rushing out shouting but he said he’d thrown it all back so didn’t know what the fuss was about. His wife was mortified. The next day he managed to drag his wife down the tow path and didn’t hear her calling. She wasn’t hurt but decided to call it a day, so the took the boat back and went home!

I could scarcely believe that Sheila Hancock is 87! She is very fit for her age.
I've always fancied a canal boat holiday, but never taken the plunge.

Ooh I'll have tho ser if I can find that one. It sounds like fun. That particular boat that Sheila and Gyles were on is way out of my price range but does look gorgeous. I presume they aren't being let at the moment though.

I was looking forward to this and it was quite entertaining but since when was The Thames a canal?! Will they be on the Amazon next week?

I also enjoyed it GrandmaSue - I like the serenity of the journeys and watched every series with Tim and Prue.

There’s another one with Gareth Edwards (Ex rugby player) and his wife, made by BBC Wales last year, which was hilarious as they got to grips with the boats on the Welsh canals.
