Suddenly my lockdown's got more bearable - watched a bio of Ronnie Scott just now, and Ella yesterday, BBC2. Both superb.
And now the light is fading - time to do 'interesting' things with a bowl of peppers..
So passeth another day...

Used to love trad jazz when I was a student. We could go to a different jazz club every night if we liked. Aker Bilk, Chris Barber et al. Loved it

Yes I'm a jazz fan too. I've watched the Ella programme and got the Ronnie Scott one bookmarked.
Also Jazz Horns Gold from Chanel 4.
My all-time favourites are Louis Armstrong, Sydney Bechet, and Wynton Marsalis.
I'm not so keen on 'Modern' Jazz, the way Wynton is going now.

Mr Cheese is a big jazz fan, he is enjoying all this stuff on BBC4.

I’m not keen on modern Jazz either but just love Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong etc. Trad.
jazz was very popular in the early 1960s and I used to go to a dance every Saturday night where they had a different jazz band every week, it was fabulous to dance to, Hiawatha Rag was my favourite.

I watched the Ronnie Scott's programme last night and found it really interesting. I love modern jazz and would love to go to the club. I can remember when Dave Brubeck was the interlude on the TV back in the day and I was fascinated by the tune Take Five.
I'll catch up with the Ella Fitzgerald programme during the week.

Dh is an avid modern jazz fan we are currently watching Dinosaur streamed from Kings Place as part of the London Jazz Festival. We have already watched someone from the Barbican (spot my in depth knowledge) and he has booked at least another couple of gigs for later in the week.

I'm not so keen so I am enjoying the chance to do other things and not rush for the train home.

DH's current favourites are Shabaka Hutchings, Nubya Garcia and Snarky Puppy.

We went to Ronnie Scott's on our wedding night and, as we were leaving, the doorman asked us to go into the office. Ronnie Scott was there holding our passports and tickets for our flights to Rome the next day. They had fallen out of DH's pocket.

I love music, but I've never "got" jazz.
It sounds as if they're tuning up, to me.

I've had a cd of Stephane Grappelli & Django Reinhardt playing on repeat in the car for weeks now. It's been a while since I went to see live jazz but George Melly was always entertaining in many ways smile

Have a listen to this MissA, it's wonderful and may just change your mind about jazz!

MissAdventure Tue 17-Nov-20 00:27:01

Right.
I'm diving in. (Hope it doesn't sound like a fly trapped in a window!) smile
Wish me luck

Alishka Tue 17-Nov-20 00:28:06

Chewbacca, great pick!MissA, did you like it?

MissAdventure Tue 17-Nov-20 00:39:56

Well, it wouldn't be my first choice of listening material.
It made me smile though, because it reminded me of the music in the old 'Tom & Jerry' cartoons.
When Tom has a date, but has a love rival who lives in a trash can. smile

Alishka Tue 17-Nov-20 00:50:26

And I've just watched and listened to George Melly - I'll go to bed happy nowsmile

MissAdventure Tue 17-Nov-20 00:52:27

I'll have a listen to him tomorrow.
Sweet dreams. moon

Lovely clip Chewbacca. Django Reinhardt is one of our favourites.

Yes I too am a Jazzer ... I love Chet Baker, Ella, Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck.
In happier times we go to Ronnie Scott’s and Kings Place and many of London’s other jazz venues, but now we can only watch on line (like MrLester).

My partner is a musician, who plays mostly a jazz set, but of course there are no gigs, weddings or events at the moment. So he’s teaching on Zoom...

Chewbacca- thanks. That was wonderful. I love the early stuff. I'm a big fan of Leon Redbone. Any others out there?
