I loved this as a child. I remember watching it on Saturday nights when my mum had gone out. It was the highpoint of my evening.

I am rewatching it now. It has lost nothing in the intervening years. I LOVE the strong female character lead.

Funny thing is that my tastes clearly haven't changed at all 45 years.

Thanks GagaJo I too have started watching the DofD.

Just a word of warning I was fiddling about trying to put on full screen and then I must have touched the wrong icon and suddenly the screen changed to a lesbian sex cartoon and then as I tried to get out of it a woman with pumped up lips and little clothing came on. I’m not joking, not my cup of tea ?

Daddima - I have had Britbox since it first started. I love it. I have just found a lovely film called The Woodlanders, based on a Thomas Hardy story, and starring Rufus Sewell. Have a box of tissues handy!

Oh yes! Bridget Jones' mother.

She was SO pretty. It took me a while to get used to her accent.

It's funny. When I was young and watched it, I liked the romance between her and Charly best. Now, I am like Lexisgranny's grandma and like seeing Louisa cook better.

Well I’m on episode 3. No problems accessing DODS via the link on my iPad.
?

When you called your students ‘little blighters’ you sounded just like Louisa GagaJo!

Gemma Jones who plays Louisa is 78y old now. She also played Pamela, the mother of Bridget Jones (Diary fame). She’s a very talented actor.

Why do I still want to say actress?
There’s no hope for me, trying to keep up these days.

Witzend, I took a month’s free trial of Britbox specifically to watch Upstairs Downstairs, but I’ve kept it for other things, like Yes Minister and The Good Life. It’s only £5.99.

Lexisgranny Sun 24-Jan-21 10:41:46

This was one of my grandmother’s favourite programmes, though she enjoyed the narrative, she mainly loved to watch Gemma Jones in the kitchen, cooking!

We used to have the DDODS and Upstairs, Downstairs, on VHS videos - I used to take them to my mother, who loved them.
All our old videos - a lot - were got rid of years ago, and alas I only recently found out that an elderly neighbour who likes the golden oldies, still uses them. She offered me Casablanca and Brief Encounter - I had to tell her I had nothing to play them on any more.

Not that either ! Never mind I can read an improving book instead

GagaJo Sun 24-Jan-21 10:26:54

It might be the strength of your wifi signal. I use the school one and if too many of the little blighters are on their devices, the video freezes for me then.

GagaJo

That's strange Lucca. I have a really old iPad and it plays ok.

I haven't registered, I just used the site without. Do you have any other kind of device.

Bflix.to

No! I don’t understand I’ll try again but it just freezes.

Littleannie Sun 24-Jan-21 09:31:46

Duchess of Duke Street and When the Boat Comes In are both on YouTube. Along with a lot of other old favourites.

No joy just gets stuck

Lucca Sun 24-Jan-21 07:15:25

Ah I’m having trouble too so I’ll try google

Daddima Sun 24-Jan-21 07:07:06

GagaJo

I am watching it on a website called Bflix.to. It is a GREAT site. Free and no adverts at all. I watched Finding Alice last week on it.

Here is a link Daddima

www3.bflix.to/series/the-duchess-of-duke-street-6l0m4

Thank you! I tried using that link on ipad, but it told me I’d have to update Flash player, which you can’t do on Apple ( in fact, I don’t think you can do it anywhere now) So, I went in to Bflix via Google, and it’s working fine.
So, no work getting done today!

I love both Duchess of Duke Street and When the Boat Comes In. We have the box sets and watch them fairly regularly.

Urmstongran Sat 23-Jan-21 21:23:40

Ps. I’ll soon catch you up GagaJo you’ve got to teach and I’m retired ...

I’m such a happy bunny watching this!
When the french chef comes in to taste the creme caramel she’s just made it reminded me of ‘Masterchef’! 1976 style.

Urmstongran Sat 23-Jan-21 21:09:41

Brilliant GagaJo! Thank you very much for this!
I’ve just tuned in.
So easy because of your link - very kind.
I didn’t realise the first episode was September 1976!

That’s me hooked for hours now.
GN will be getting less of a look in the next few days!

I’d never even heard of the server.
Thanks again.

Yes! And I have recognised the actress playing Louisa as the mother in law in Finding Alice.
