TV tonight: Lily James and Dominic West star in The Pursuit of Love .......... Emily Mortimer's adaptation of Nancy Mitford's tale of love and passion between the wars begins.

Lillie

To me it was exagerated and shallow.

That's the point though. Plus it's based on real people who actually did a lot of the thi gs NM wrote about!
There really was 'a bolter'!!
I'm reading about her now.
Loved Freddie fox, the blond fop.
The biggest problem for me was LJ had very little expression on her face. A pouty bottom lip to show childish ness. Or an open mouth to express e erythi g from surprise to annoyance, and other emotions to many to mention.
No narrowing of the eyes, raising of the eyebrows etc.
Rendered it necessary for her to try other ways, which were less effective.

Four people in my circle watched and hated it, none of us are going to watch the rest
Yes we re all different and it’s certainly divided us on here no half measures we ve either hated it or loved it Good job we don’t all go to the cinema together ???

Callistemon Mon 10-May-21 14:42:59

I think you had to be in the right mood for it.

I wasn't.

MayBee70 Mon 10-May-21 14:42:55

I just read that it’s decorative and surrounds the fireplace.

Emily49 Mon 10-May-21 14:11:09

Isn’t a mantel the wood or stone piece spanning the fireplace, to support the wall above?

MayBee70 Mon 10-May-21 14:00:51

Does a mantelpiece have a drape over it (like a bird of prey mantling it’s prey) and a chimney piece not have a drape?

Emily49 Mon 10-May-21 13:35:58

I believe the U version of ‘mantelpiece’ is ‘chimneypiece’. I have never heard anyone say it
No, me neither - we obviously don’t move in the right circles!

DH and I watched it and really enjoyed it. I loved the energy of the production, the music, the costumes and the humour.
I feel that anyone expecting it to be "played straight" would find it difficult to enjoy.
BTW why was the word "mantelpiece" considered to be Non-U and what should one have called it? confused

I watched it, but wasn't 'hooked'. I might watch further episodes but won't regret it if I miss some. I think Lily James is a fine actor but wasted on the feather-brained Linda.

It’s refreshing to see how different we all are! Life would be boring if we all liked the same things. I enjoyed this drama. I had read the book, but one always has to accept that films and TV programmes based on books are “adaptations”. Over the years we have seen many Shakespeare plays at Stratford - several versions of Midsummer Nights Dream, for example, with each one being very different. I always think it’s a good idea to be open to new ideas, new artworks, new writing. I found this adaptation to be lively, colourful and interesting.

Best bits for me were the sets and the costumes and the punk band playing D'ye ken John Peel.

Otherwise, DH and I couldn't make head nor tail of it. We found the Linda character to be annoying, to say the least. I didn't catch the comedic aspect at all. We watched the whole hour in case we suddenly 'got it'.

I might give it another go next week to see whether it improves.

Lin52 Mon 10-May-21 11:57:30

Saw the clip for it, no thanks. Jane MacDonald, such a breath of normality, cruising that’s for me. As a former cruiser on a Princess ship, took me back to more pleasant times.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 10-May-21 11:15:33

I thought the modern adaption was a breath of fresh air and like others lighthearted glorious entertainment. Full of fluff and fun

westendgirl Mon 10-May-21 10:46:26

Loved it .Found it great fun and sheer escapism. Wonderful acting.

Gingster Mon 10-May-21 10:43:01

Not how I thought it would be but didn’t hate it. I don’t like the modern music - doesn’t fit at all. I will watch it again next week just to see. I love Lily James in everything.

Grandmajean Mon 10-May-21 10:42:09

Gave up - life's too short !

Callistemon Mon 10-May-21 10:40:50

Back to the books, I think, although, oddly enough, I hadn't read this one, just the sequel which I pinched from my Mum, so that was a very long time ago .

Delila Mon 10-May-21 10:38:06

I loved everything about it, including the soundtrack.

Deedaa Mon 10-May-21 10:32:08

It's many years since I read the book and I enjoyed it. It seems to have avoided the sort of "reimagining" that is so popular now with plots and characters being changed beyond recognition (Yes I am talking about you Sarah Phelps).

I think Linda could have been prettier but Andrew Scott makes up for any shortcomings!

Lucca Mon 10-May-21 10:23:00

Wasn’t Tony revolting! Some good acting, not least being Fanny.

aquagran Mon 10-May-21 10:14:54

Wait till Fabrice arrives. Mmmmm!

hazel93 Mon 10-May-21 10:14:33

I did stick it out but that's another hour wasted.
Where was the comedy ? Apart from the scenes Dominic West and Andrew Scott were in it was dire.
Far too much attention on Lily James as in close ups etc. plus the fact I didn't feel she came across as credible.

Witzend Mon 10-May-21 10:13:55

I’m a great fan of the books*. so didn’t expect to enjoy it, but I did.
Disappointed not to hear Uncle Matthew utter his ‘immortal’ line, though - ‘Abroad is unutterably bloody and foreigners are fiends.’ ?

I once saved Love in a Cold Climate to re-read while in labour with dd2. Nurses kept coming and asking what on earth I was laughing at, since by then contractions were getting on well, so to speak.

TerriBull Mon 10-May-21 10:07:43

I would continue to watch it even if I hadn't liked it simply because Andrew Scott is in it!
