Anne Boleyn

Why is a black woman playing Anne Boleyn? Has this been done to appease those who want to change our history? I, for one, am fed up with the people who graffiti, damage and remove anything from British history that they don't agree with. History has happened, it is past, you can't change it but you can learn from it. Anne Boleyn was white so she should be played by a white actress. If Benedict Cumberbatch announced he was playing Martin Luther-King there would be hell to pay.

When I saw that advertised, I KNEW there would be complaints on Gransnet.

It isn't real. It's an adaptation. Give over with the racism.

Do not call me a racist. I find that highly offensive. I just happen to like authenticity in historical drama. That's my opinion and I am entitled to it, in the same way you are entitled to yours. No way is that racist.

Your statement was racist. WHY would you link a black actress to graffiti? It's aligned with the DM linking Meghan Markel's mother's neighbourhood JUST because she's black.

Your need for authenticity is an excuse for asking for TV / film to remain predominantly white.

There are people on Twitter blaming the BBC for rewriting history. So eager to criticise the BBC that they havn't noticed it is a Channel five programme

Today is the anniversary of her execution. Every year a bouquet of red roses is delivered to the Tower of London from an anonymous trust with the request to lay them on her grave. They are only removed when they have withered away.

Her execution was state sanctioned murder. Trumped up charges because her husband wanted to marry somebody else who might give him a boy.

But if Othello were white, then the play wouldn’t make sense.
A white ewe and a black ram ? Or does the language have to be changed too. Iago was fairly easily able to exploit the insecurities of Othello and persuade him to murder Desdemona. I imagine that Othello’s insecurities were in part because he was black.

I am horrified with that suggestion. No, just plain no.

AussieNanna Wed 19-May-21 15:02:28

If it was authentic we wouldn't be able to understand a word they say.
Of course there is some modern adaptation the actors don't speak, or neccesarily look, exactly as they really did.

AcornFairy Wed 19-May-21 14:58:03

Then surely, Hithere, to be authentic she should have worn pale makeup? Just asking.

Riverwalk Wed 19-May-21 14:57:00

I just happen to like authenticity in historical drama

Why the mention of graffiti and damage if all you're concerned with is authenticity?

AcornFairy Wed 19-May-21 14:55:35

GagaJo Whatever is it in Sarnia ‘s post that caused you to attach racism to her post? As far as I understand the term racism denotes a negative attitude towards someone/people of a certain race. I have re-read Sarnia’s post several times and no way can I interpret it in the way you seem to have done. Like me I think she was simply commenting on the historical veracity or otherwise of the portrayal of Anne Boleyn. I’m genuinely interested to know why this evidently touched such a raw nerve with you and led to your unjust reaction.

Hithere Wed 19-May-21 14:43:10

I believe authenticity is in the ability in acting, not in appearance.

I must admit to really liking the colour blind casting in Bridgerton. If that's what it was. It seemed to add sparkle and interest to what could have been a fairly ordinary story.

theworriedwell Wed 19-May-21 13:25:32

Elainel how exciting, I'll watch out for her. Has she got a big part?

ElaineI Wed 19-May-21 13:13:44

My niece is in this. Her parents are Indian. They left Kenya when it became dangerous. They have worked since they arrived in UK 45 odd years ago. All their children were born and brought up and went to uni here. Same with grandchildren. Anyone want to have a go at her?

Mildmanneredgran Wed 19-May-21 12:56:21

Even now she remains controversial!

This is not new.

Bridgeton, the new version of beauty and the beast...

Jesus Christ wasnt white but he keeps getting represented as such on the screen.

Lucca Wed 19-May-21 12:34:21

Or we could bring back the black and white minstrel
Show?

trisher Wed 19-May-21 12:31:50

If "everything should be left in its place" should we then go back to having boys play the women in Shakespeare?

Lucca Wed 19-May-21 12:24:25

*Everything should be left in its place*
But who decides on what that place should be? What do you mean by ‘place’ anyway?

That is a very good point. How should everything be left in its place? No change ever ? No progress ..

Dinahmo Wed 19-May-21 12:12:26

I see nothing wrong with the casting at all. I am fed up with all the programmes about the Tudors however.

If we are to have more films/series about earlier Royals maybe the Georges 111 and 1V would make good subjects.

It is believed that Queen Charlotte (wife of George 111) was of mixed race since she was descended from Alphonso 11 of Portugal and his Moorish paramour. Reading some of the contemporary descriptions of Queen Charlotte, she was fairly accurately depicted in Bridgerton.

I don't know what's sickening about a black actor taking on the role of a white person.

Just because the OP conflated the casting with graffiti and damage doesn't mean there's any connection, or appeasement.

Sarnia and ellenvanin do you ever go to the theatre?

GagaJo Wed 19-May-21 11:42:46

I like your point, theworriedwell.

GagaJo Wed 19-May-21 11:41:59

Everything should be left in its place. I love Porgy and Bess, but for God's sake leave things as they are. I wouldn't want to see white actors in their place.

If that was done, we'd never see people of colour in art. Our history is white. Our arts are mostly white.
