Eurovision Song Contest....time to leave?

Can I confess to going to Eurovision in Vienna a few years back. It was such fun. The whole city given over to the contest in one way or another and everybody enjoying themselves with mocking good humour.

We came near the bottom (of course) had Union Jack T-shirt’s and proudly wore our “shirt of shame”. Hunky Swedes (they won) patted us patronisingly and bought us drinks.

I really need to do it again before I die, so don’t stop it yet.?

Amanda is all about Amanda. How she's got where she is is a mystery to me.

JaneJudge Sun 23-May-21 10:28:28

Apparently she has been blamed by some people for us getting nil points grin

Haven’t watched this for years.

TBH the last time I did, I thought it something of a badge of honour to get nul points in what to me was a pretty dire cringe-fest.

It was OK when Sandie Shaw won it, though! ?

It was just such an embarrassing thing to say.

Just what I was thinking, time to pull the plug.

Amanda Holden's speech sounded like she was impersonating David Walliams

JaneJudge Sun 23-May-21 10:22:34

Also we actually made a financial contribution to be included in the final! as did poor Germany who only faired slightly better and they were at least entertaining

Fact is, the nil points was not about the singer, or the song.

The costumes are the best thing about it I think Luckygirl, they are so bad they are really amusing - the babushka on wheels for example!
It’s quite clear the U.K. is disliked, and Amanda Holden didn’t do us any favours when she gave the U.K. points out, she didn’t even attempt to speak any other languages, and talked rubbish.
Time to leave.

Luckygirl

It is such a grim contest: all fifth rate music which the performers seek to disguise with increasingly ridiculous sets and costumes. A waste of time and money.

The French singer, Barbara, was great. And a few others had great songs and much simpler sets and costumes. Hate all the semi-pornographic stuff and dancing. Terrible message for young women and grand-daughters.

If we are to continue then we should make more effort to find an exciting song and artist which has a good chance of winning. Our efforts seem weak compared to some of the others. If we entered something with more power and glitz and still got null points then we would know it was a political decision, but as it is we don't know whether it's because the song is weak.

JaneJudge Sun 23-May-21 10:21:21

It was a terrible song! I think they should get Harry Hill to do next years, at least that would be entertaining.

I had a bit too much wine last night but the end part really reminded me of the hunger games blush

Leave? Could you imagine the headlines every time it was possible, think DM style!

MawBe Sun 23-May-21 10:18:12

Definitely “Time to Say Goodbye” - I should have thought leaving the Eurovision Song Contest was the principal advantage of Brexit!

Time to leave. Our song was not the worst song and it is clear that some countries vote for each other regardless. We are UK no mates.

B9exchange Sun 23-May-21 10:12:01

We are only still in it because of the money we are prepared to stump up for it, other countries scoring nil points would not be invited back the next year. Perhaps that money could be better spent on a tiny bit of the recovery costs we now need? I found the whole thing humiliating.

Galaxy Sun 23-May-21 10:11:08

It really wasnt a great song.

Kate1949 Sun 23-May-21 10:09:10

I think it's because they don't like us. Time to pull out.

Chestnut Sun 23-May-21 10:04:56

Why is it we can never produce an exciting song or artist even though we have the given the world the very best of popular music over the last 60 years? I imagine we are getting null points because the song is rubbish, not because they don't like us.
Should we leave Eurovision altogether? We are contributing a fair bit towards it, which seems like a waste of money if we can't make more effort with our entries.
