9/11 LIFE UNDER ATTACK

We're just watching this now, Sweetpeasue. So much footage that hasn't been shown before. What an horrendous attack. Unforgettable.

This programme started at 9 and it has been very cleverly put together so it appears, in the beginning, to show the planes crashing into the towers in real time. It felt as if we were watching it live.
The reactions of the various people while going about their daily lives--shock, disbelief, bewilderment and horror. The firemen and rescue workers doing their jobs under such extreme pressure. I'm just in shock having watched it. There was a man on the streets amongst the devastation offering free hugs! And people gratefully receiving them.
I've never seen a programme like this that has had such an impact.

No matter how many times I see it, my brain still cannot take in the sight of those two planes flying straight into the buildings. It is still as unbelievable today as it was then. I can't imagine the shock of seeing it happen before your eyes. Just total disbelief.

Yes Chestnut. It just doesn't make sense does it? These terrorists were /are not like us. They are quite obviously brainwashed. But I believe they are also evil.

It was just as shocking seeing it tonight as it was then. I remember exactly where I was when we saw it on the news and we watched the impact into the 2nd tower shown live.

Seeing the aftermath from the viewpoint of local people this evening was horrific too.

Since I am in the US, I am unsure if this program is available for me to watch. Is it on BBC or another platform?

I am currently watching a different program called Turning Point 9/11 and the War on Terror on Netflix.

While I was no where near New York on that day, I still remember it happening. One of the feelings I remember most was how eerie it seemed when there were no planes in the sky. Normally plane traffic is something you rarely notice it when it is there, but once it was gone you could not not notice it.

My husband great aunt worked in the US Federal Court and her office window overlooked the Statue of Liberty (not a WTC building, but near by). We visited her a couple of years later and she described being locked into the building for 3 days and them having to search for something they could break into the vending machine with so they could get food and drinks. I can not even begin to imagine.

I just realized that I could very well look it up myself! SO I will do that.

I do recommend the other program on Netflix though.

I think you chose the right word there freedomfromthepast. It all seemed so "eerie".

I remember watching it live on tv as we both had the day off work. Someone rang and said put the tv on. This was before the second plane had hit. It was shocking enough seeing it on tv. I don't think I'd truly acknowledged how petrifying it would have been for all those first hand witness that day

I remember watching it on my classroom computer with others. The dinner supervisors came in to school with the awful news at lunch time.
Unbelievable. What amazing ,skillfull, wicked planning was involved to pull off such an atrocity.

Those scenes were absolutely unbelievable, even as they unfolded on our TV screens. The programme was on ITV Freedomfromthepast.

The programme was all completely live footage with no commentators or running dialogue. It was 1
1/2 hrs of scenes taken by people at the time from the start of what was just an ordinary day with people going about their business. It was such an extraordinary programme.

I remember i was driving home from a local town and it came on the radio about a plane crashing into a building in the States. When i got home it was just after 1pm and i put tv on for the news and was transfixed along with my DH just watching it all happen.

20 years on my memory had blunted the images of how truly shocking was the attack on the USA that day. Amidst all the carnage, death and destruction there were some wonderful heart-warming stories too. A young office worker coming down the stairs and meeting a wheelchair bound lady on the landing outside her office. He picked her up and carried her down 68 flights of stairs to safety. I find it incredibly sad that the terrorists who plotted such a cruel atrocity cannot channel their energies into making their own countries a better place to live.

I agree that the individual stories made it all so real and amazing (in the true sense). The mother picking her little boy up from school, the children's questions and the woman who kept thanking the person who saved her life by dragging her inside.
And the fear everyone felt not knowing how many more attacks were coming.

DH and I both agree that the two most terrible events in our lifetime are the assassination of President Kennedy in 1963 and 9/11. I am watching the Netflix series too and I can also recommend the drama The Looming Tower which is based on the mistakes made prior to 9/11, mainly the intense rivalry and lack of cooperation between the CIA and the FBI because of their intense rivalry. I believe it is a 10 part drama and it stars Jeff Daniels as John O Neill of the FBI’s counterterrorism unit; there is also a programme about John O’Neill on Netflix. John O’Neill was a very flawed character but he was convinced of the danger posed by Al Quaeda and Bin Laden and worked hard to gather evidence to support this, unfortunately few people supported him, including the CIA.
