Watched the first episode of this last night and really struggled with hearing the dialogue. Am I the only one who had to keep turning the sound up and down? Don’t want to give up on the programme but struggled.

Just for the record, I dont mean I'd like to see a sequel. Just that was the only reason I could think of to write it in that way!smile

Just catching up to the final part now, Thursday morning. I kept hoping it would improve. It didn't. The premise was OK but I've rarely seen worse acting. Or dialogue. Or script writing.

Yup!
Has anyone noticed the similarity between Anna Maxwell Martin and Nichola Walker? If you close your eyes they are dead ringers. The same voice and same delivery, half spoken sentences that trail off and many murmers of ‘sorry, sorry’.
More holes than a sieve in the plot.
Even the set ( was it a real place?!) was unbelivable. The interiors were out of a magazine ( as was the office of the headmistress) and nobody appeared to have a job apart from her.
How could they possibly afford the huge house on the river ( at the end) she owned or part owned a cafe ( though didn’t work in it) and her partner didn’t have a job.Neither did David who lived next door (BIL) and what part did the only cheerful and normal man play in the whole scheme of things ( the also unemployed brother of the partner of Maxwell Martin.)
Why did the headmistress move the body of the boy....no need. All she had to do was steal the phone.
The whole thing was bizarre and a waste of viewing time.

Please....no sequel! I won't be watching it anyway. I agree it was a waste of good actors, and I'm surprised they agreed to do it. And I still can't hear a word AMM is whispering, have to use sub titles. Why can't she speak clearly?

Calendargirl Fri 22-Oct-21 15:51:32

A sequel would have to have a different title, with Theresa’s family having moved away, Helen incarcerated, Eddie whizzed off in his camper van, only David and little Eva left there.

Namsnanny Fri 22-Oct-21 14:35:13

I do agree about the rowing boat flash backs.
I thought it was me missing something crucial!
The only thing I can think of is they are planning a sequel.
Which I wouldn't mind, if only to tie up the boating loose endgrin.

I thought there would have been a reason why the other episodes kept giving flashbacks of the head teacher's sister in the rowing boat. It seems a bit pointless showing those if no explanation was forthcoming. Pity the poor person having to share a cell with the ex-headteacher. She has such a mournful voice.

Glad i didnt watch after the first episode going by these reviews. So many dramas promise so much in the ads leading up to them but fail miserably once you start viewing.

H1954 Fri 22-Oct-21 08:11:26

The plot might have been intriguing but it was wasted on some really good actors.........must have cost a fortune to produce considering the cast involved.
Would we all have still watched it if the two from Bletchley Park weren't in the cast? Probably not me.

JaneJudge Fri 22-Oct-21 07:57:39

I didn't understand any of it

BigBertha1 Fri 22-Oct-21 07:02:26

Well I'm glad that's over.

Calendargirl Fri 22-Oct-21 06:51:31

Chestnut

That one with Jill Halfpenny as an ex teacher with a missing child was pretty awful, was it ‘The Drowning’’?

And another one set in Ireland about a dead author, her husband and girlfriend, and the chap from Normal People. Cannot remember title, it was rubbish.

I agree absolutely. Managed about 20 mins this time and was nearly falling asleep so had to stop there. The dialogue in hospital was soooo sloooow it was painfully boring. The most exciting thing was when they got in the car! I feel obliged to watch to the end as I've invested too much time to stop now, but I may have to do it in 20 min blocks to keep awake. Possibly the worst series I've watched in years (can't think of another this bad though).

Eloethan Thu 21-Oct-21 23:59:46

It started well but, like many dramas these days, seemed to fizzle out. So many issues were left unaddressed too.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Thu 21-Oct-21 17:01:02

I switched it on just to see the conclusion as I got on with my knitting. What I can't understand is how they could possibly afford to live in such an enormous house - what on earth did they do for a living?

trisher Thu 21-Oct-21 09:35:14

It was the lying around in a boat that got me, especially at the end when they seemed to move to live near a river.
Implausible, badly acted and incomprehensible. But I watched it didn't I!!!

I was about to say the same Sago.

Sago Wed 20-Oct-21 22:26:23

There’s 4 hours I’ll never get back?.

Kandinsky Wed 20-Oct-21 22:12:15

Oh right.

But I agree, we never found out about their past lives and obvious secrets.

Calendargirl Wed 20-Oct-21 22:08:50

It was spotted with blood though Kandinsky

Kandinsky Wed 20-Oct-21 22:07:13

Absolutely rubbish.
I reluctantly stuck with it but wish I hadn’t bothered.
The best part about it was the head teachers beautiful white coat - which managed to stay beautiful & white despite being in a car crash and rolled around in the mud.

Calendargirl Wed 20-Oct-21 22:02:13

Another peculiar drama, which didn’t answer many questions, about the sisters past lives and relationships.

Odd.

Calendargirl Wed 20-Oct-21 21:46:57

So the headmistress dun it.

BlueBelle Sat 16-Oct-21 05:12:30

I thought they lived nearly next door Trisher not a soul in the streets of this estate no cats or dogs wandering around no kids playing bit if a ghost town
I m enjoying it warts and all

Eloethan Sat 16-Oct-21 00:36:44

I've really been enjoying this - it's quite intriguing.
