Why on receiving an award do some say to the audience
‘I love you’

TerriBull Mon 14-Mar-22 18:05:23

These slap on the back ceremonies seem ridiculously superfluous right now. I didn't watch, I would if Ricky Gervais has been hosting though!. I've heard of Rebel Wilson, haven't really seen her in anything.

My husband told me "The Power of Dog" having watched it on Netflix was just awful, so I didn't bother with it. We enjoyed Belfast at the cinema I believe that won a few gongs. I don't know whether I'm alone in thinking this, but I feel some of these award fests have had their day who wants to hear one after the other of often embarrassing overly long and emotional speeches with their interminable list of thank yous to people no one has heard of before they get off. The wonderful Shirley MacLaine just grabbed hers many years ago, with a "I deserve this" and scarpered, that's the way to do it!

She an Australian actress.

maddyone Mon 14-Mar-22 17:54:29

By the way, who on earth is Rebel Wilson?

maddyone Mon 14-Mar-22 17:53:51

I dislike the BAFTAS intensely, and the OSCARS too and absolutely never watch. I hate the luvvies all patting each on the back and saying how wonderful they all are. I hate the thank you speeches where they thank everyone they ever knew. I hate the toe curlingly awful bits of material that pass for dresses. And I loathe the way that they pose and pout on the red carpet. I used to watch years ago, but now I only ever see bits of it on the news, and that’s more than I want to see.
I’m not surprised Prince William declined to attend. In Ukraine people are being indiscriminately terrorised and slaughtered and in the UK all the luvvies are out in force congratulating each other for doing their absolutely unimportant jobs. I hate it!

Total embarrassment, why would anyone think she would be good as a host.
There must be others much more suited to the role or were they looking for the shock factor.

Calendargirl Mon 14-Mar-22 15:07:24

Never heard of her.

crazyH Mon 14-Mar-22 14:49:00

I usually watch it just to see all the pretty dresses……
Btw, who were the two young persons who appeared for a few seconds at the start and introduced Rebel Wilson? They should have done the whole show.

dogsmother Mon 14-Mar-22 14:42:01

Oh my goodness, we turned it on and listened in disbelief! She’s awful, don’t know she is or where they dragged her in from but please never again. We have wealth of talent in the UK she was not funny, and not pleasant.

Rebel was cringefully (if that's a word) awful and embarrassing. Dame Shirley was great.

paddyann54 Mon 14-Mar-22 14:01:11

NanaAng14 Mon 14-Mar-22 13:36:18

Toe curling cringe !!
I switched off after the 007 piece .
I felt embarrassed for her !

Anniebach Mon 14-Mar-22 13:29:19

I had never heard of her, ghastly woman , I read she was the host at the 2020 awards, could she be the reason Prince
William didn’t attend this year ?

MerylStreep Mon 14-Mar-22 13:09:01

Not me. I’m only repeating what the Daily Mail said.
Can’t bear what I refer to as oxygen thieves.

Esspee Mon 14-Mar-22 13:02:35

Who watches these types of programmes?

Zoejory Mon 14-Mar-22 13:02:14

Read about it. Doesn't sound as if I missed anything.

MerylStreep Mon 14-Mar-22 13:02:11

Somehow she made Sam Fox & Mick Fleetwood look good. That wasn’t easy ?

DerbyshireLass Mon 14-Mar-22 13:00:01

I switched off too, after the Benedict Cumberpatch section. ?

Jane43 Mon 14-Mar-22 12:54:04

I usually watch it but didn’t pick up that it was on, it sounds as if I didn’t miss much.

merlotgran Mon 14-Mar-22 12:53:14

I turned off after ten minutes.

kittylester Mon 14-Mar-22 12:44:00

I thought she was dreadful!

Sarnia Mon 14-Mar-22 12:39:36

It may just be me but I thought Rebel Wilson's stint as BAFTA presenter was toe-curlingly embarrassing. Benedict Cumberbatch looked as if he could have cheerfully shoved her head first into the cake she was pestering him with and Lady Gaga and her boyfriend were not one bit impressed when Wilson presented him with a giant gold bra. Added to this her feeble attempts at 'jokes' about Andrew, Harry & Meghan (yawn) and sideswipes at others, including J.K. Rowling and she spoilt the whole event for me. I kept pausing the TV for a while then fast forwarding to avoid sitting through any more of her drivel.
